Delay-dependent robust<Emphasis Type="Italic">H</Emphasis><Subscript>∞</Subscript> control for a class of uncertain switched systems with time delay

For linear switched system with both parameter uncertainties and time delay, a delay-dependent sufficient condition for the existence of a new robustH _∞ feedback controller was formulated in nonlinear matrix inequalities solvable by an LMI-based iterative algorithm. Compared with the conventional state-feedback controller, the proposed controller can achieve better robust control performance since the delayed state is utilized as additional feedback information and the parameters of the proposed controllers are changed synchronously with the dynamical characteristic of the system. This design method was also extended to the case where only delayed state is available for the controller. The example of balancing an inverted pendulum on a cart demonstrates the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed design methods. Study of transport behavior for Fe-doping La<Subscript>0.67</Subscript>Ca<Subscript>0.33</Subscript>MnO<Subscript>3</Subscript> perovskite manganese

Systematic studies of the transport properties of La_0.67Ca_0.33Mn_1?xFe _x O₃ (x=0–0.3) systems showed that with increasing Fe-doping contentx the resistance increases and the insulator-metal transition temperature moves to lower temperature. For small doping content, the transport property satisfies metal transport behavior below the transition temperature, and above the transition temperature it satisfies the small polaron model. This behavior can be explained by Fe³⁺ doping, which easily forms Fe³⁺?O^2??Mn⁴⁺ channel, suppressing the double exchange Mn³⁺?O^2??Mn⁴⁺ channel and enhancing the spin scattering of Mn ions induced by antiferromagnetic clusters of Fe ions.     

Moral Values and Science Teaching: A Malaysian School Curriculum Initiative

Implicit in teaching science has been the teaching of a set of values. However, its presence has remained unacknowledged because of assumptions made that its products are value-free and that work of science involves positive values. Malaysian schools have introduced a set of noble values to be taught as a subject called moral education while at the same time expecting all subjects, including the sciences to actively inculcate these noble values in their lessons. A search for values related to science included studies from science education curriculums, studies by scientists and philosophers of science, feminist and Indian critics of science. These values could be categorized into four categories representing epistemological values, supporting values, societal and moral values and power-oriented values. While some categories compliment each other, others are in contention. This paper argues for the inclusion of societal and moral values in the science classrooms. A compassionate scientist should be a reality. The task for Malaysian science educators is to find a way to raise awareness of these values.

黎家湾隧道不良地质段施工控制技术研究

为深入研究隧道穿越不良地质段的施工控制技术,以黎家湾隧道为工程实例,全面总结分析黎家湾隧道的工程地质情况,提出了采用超前小导管注浆、注浆堵水加固、台阶分部开挖法等施工控制技术,并通过数值模拟计算对其控制效果进行评价。研究结果表明采用上述施工控制措施后,隧道围岩及支护结构变形得到了有效控制,研究成果对类似工程有供借鉴意义。     

A Distribution-Free Approach for Comparing Growth of Knowledge

The longitudinal testing of student achievement requires the solution of several new problem areas. In this article, several small groups of medical students at the University of Limburg Medical School in Maastricht, The Netherlands, are compared with respect to their performances. The results indicate, that, despite the possession of more knowledge at entrance, students with a low rate of growth of knowledge in the first year demonstrate a lower level of knowledge after the second academic year and continue to do so throughout the academic program when compared to students who show a higher rate of growth of knowledge in the first year. The analysis has been carried out using a distribution-free version of a longitudinal IRT-model suggested by Albers, Does, Imbos, and Janssen (1989). Furthermore, growth of knowledge has been described by means of a general regression model. Statistical inferences are possible using a randomization design extended to the situation where the observations are time-dependent proportions of correct answers.
