Developing an Approach to Educational Management Development in South Africa

This paper analyses the extent and adequacy of the provision of training and development in educational management in South Africa. Using data from a recent survey, the paper argues that current provision is fragmented and inadequate to need. It makes some suggestions for developing a more coherent strategy for management development.     

Handwriting: Evolution and evaluation

Handwriting, “everyone’s art,” is an indispensable skill. The roots of our present forms of penmanship are traced. When and which initial style to teach children, especially the dyslexic or learning disabled, are discussed. The need for a good instrument to evaluate handwriting to prevent perpetuation of illegibilities or to determine if speed is rapid enough to meet the writer’s purpose is paramount. A new diagnostic tool, the Children’s Handwriting Evaluation Scale (CHES) and its college counterpart are detailed. The CHES also provides a projective scoring key based on graphoanalytic interpretations.     

Techniques of Online Citation Verification in NLM Databases

This article is an exploration of techniques for identifying items in the health related literature using NLM system databases. Examples used are derived from reference desk and interlibrary loan files, but the techniques should be useful to any medical librarian who needs to verify a citation. A knowledge of NLM indexing practices and system commands is assumcd. Because of mace limitations the TOXLINE. TOXBACK74, TOXBACK65,AVLINE files have been omitted, but other bibliographic files and SERLINE are included. Tables designed for at-terminal use are presented.     

Building citizenship in fragmented societies: The challenges of deracialising and integrating schools in post-Apartheid South Africa

Soon after the collapse of Apartheid, the new government in South Africa set about restructuring the educational system, which was previously segregated by race, class and language. This paper argues that the deracialisation and integration of schools in South Africa has been difficult to achieve and as a process, uneven in different parts of the country and in types of schools.     

Changing Patterns in the Middle Management of Higher Education Institutions: The Case of Portugal

Abstact Much of the writing on higher education in recent years has tended to assume that the new management push in higher education is both universal and irreversible. This paper, however, presents evidence from Portugal to challenge that assumption. While elements of the new managerialism are clearly evident in the perceptions and attitudes of academics in charge of the basic academic units (departments/schools and faculties) in the country’s universities and polytechnics, academic management remains faced with a complex, contradictory and conflicting set of demands and expectations which is likely to take a considerable time to resolve.
