Student Apathy

In this article, we examine a new global studies program that departs from the traditional state-centric approach and uses a geocentric, or earth-centered, approach that emphasizes the roles of individuals, grassroots organizations, cultural groups, and international organizations in an attempt to help students conceptualize global events and their role in the world as interrelated and interdependent. We describe the process of program development, the program itself, and the challenges of program approval.

Effect of Selected Doses of Alcohol on Fatigue Parameters of the Forearm Flexor Muscles

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to enhance knowledge of the effect of alcohol on physical performance by analyzing the effect of a small and moderate dose of alcohol on several aspects of muscular strength and endurance; in addition to the standard dosages, a large dose was given to an experimental subgroup. The parameters studied included initial strength, maximal strength, steady state or final strength, total work, fatigable work and the rate of fatigue of the forearm flexors. Male university students (N = 35) served as subjects and underwent three trials of a standardized work task consisting of intermittent maximum contractions of the forearm flexors performed at the rate of 30/min. for 6 min. Prior to each trial, each subject consumed either a control, small, or moderate dose of alcohol. The statistical analysis indicated that a small or moderate dose of alcohol had no effect on five of the parameters under investigation. The mathematical analysis of the rate of fatigue indicated rather large differences between the main rate constants, but the findings must be interpreted cautiously due to the insignificant nature of the statistical analysis. It was concluded that a small or moderate amount of alcohol had no effect on the strength and endurance variables under investigation.     

Scale and the evolutionarily based approximate number system: an exploratory study

ABSTRACT

Crosscutting concepts such as scale, proportion, and quantity are recognised by U.S. science standards as a potential vehicle for students to integrate their scientific and mathematical knowledge; yet, U.S. students and adults trail their international peers in scale and measurement estimation. Culturally based knowledge of scale such as measurement units may be built on evolutionarily-based systems of number such as the approximate number system (ANS), which processes approximate representations of numerical magnitude. ANS is related to mathematical achievement in pre-school and early elementary students, but there is little research on ANS among older students or in science-related areas such as scale. Here, we investigate the relationship between ANS precision in public school U.S. seventh graders and their accuracy estimating the length of standard units of measurement in SI and U.S. customary units. We also explored the relationship between ANS and science and mathematics achievement. Accuracy estimating the metre was positively and significantly related to ANS precision. Mathematics achievement, science achievement, and accuracy estimating other units were not significantly related to ANS. We thus suggest that ANS precision may be related to mathematics understanding beyond arithmetic, beyond the early school years, and to the crosscutting concepts of scale, proportion, and quantity.     

Déficits socioculturales en niños de educación especial. Elaboración experimental de un programa de rehabilitación

Resumen

La experiencia realizada en las aulas de Educación Especial en la ciudad de Jaén pone de relieve los problemas educativos que plantean las mismas. Presentamos un tratamiento rehabilitador aplicado a un grupo de niños de educación especial y se contrastan los resultados con otros dos grupos que no reciben directamente el programa. Los resultados obtenidos revelan la efectividad del tratamiento y la inadecuación del actual sistema de aulas de Educación Especial en el contexto escolar. Se discuten y analizan los factores implicados y se ofrece evidencia experimental de los mismos. A partir de los resultados se extrae una serie de consecuencias de interés, sobre todo de cara a la aplicación educativa.     

Where the Goddess of Beauty Prevails Cultural Renaissance in Ceylon

Stirrings of deep old consciousness are awakening the peoples of the East. Ceylon is no exception. Pendant from India at the south the “pearl” glistens in the sunshine. If ever there were a glistening isle it is this. Of India, yet not of it. Tangled with it racially, and by the trade and wars of many centuries, yet separate. Separate in government, separate in history, separate in race. Ancient and very ancient, newly discovering its old ancientry. Bound there in the mighty growths of the jungle lies buried a whole civilization. There it rests, its location lost, attested to by early records in the Mahavansa, but still undiscovered by modern man. It awaits a new generation, a generation now rising in the youth of Ceylon.
