Abstract Students develop robust mental models of teaching and learning during their school years, and as such, often teach as they were taught—possibly perpetuating practices that limit intellectual inquiry in classrooms. This paper reports on an analysis, using a conceptual framework and NUD?1ST software, of a cohort of 3rd‐year teacher education students' reflections on changes in their mental models following their experiences in a problem‐based learning (PBL) topic. Results provide evidence that students do report changing mental models in areas such as (a) the value of case studies for engaging with subject content, motivating learning, and connecting theory with practice; (b) self‐reflection and peer collaboration for cognitive and professional growth; and (c) processes of inquiry for developing self‐regulated learning practices. 相似文献
In many developing countries attempts to develop the quality of science education stress the importance of inservice education and training (InSET). This article focuses on how such InSET should be phased through time for maximum effect. Several theoretical models that describe and explain stages in the processes of professional learning or educational development are reviewed. Their relevance in informing the planning of science InSET is reviewed in the light of the experience of the Primary Science Programme (PSP) in South Africa. Two main criticisms of existing models are made: 1. They neglect language development as a crucial factor limiting the development of teaching styles especially where pupils are learning in a second language. 2. There are flaws in the way that the recommendations of models have been combined in existing synthesis models. Finally a synthesis model for the phasing of science InSET is proposed. 相似文献
This quantitative study investigated the relationship between teacher dispositions, subject content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge, and reasons that school principals recommend non-renewal of probationary teachers' contracts. Principals in the Southeastern Unites States completed an e-mailed survey. Two nonparametric tests, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney U, were used to statistically analyze group responses. Principals reported that they observed most a lack of pedagogical content knowledge from ineffective teachers and they prioritized the importance of instructional skills in deciding whether to non-renew a teacher contract. Principals identified teacher integrity, dependability, and honesty as important dispositions. The studies' findings are important for universities that prepare preservice teachers and also for the planning of professional development initiatives. The study findings suggest that principals tend to view dispositions as personality characteristics rather than as teacher competencies and that teacher expertise in both subject content and pedagogy must be woven together. 相似文献
Background: In recent years increasing attention has been given to models-based approaches to physical education as a way of promoting standards and particular types of learning through better alignment of teacher planning and delivery with pupil learning and achievement. However, little attention has been given to the specific contribution a pedagogical model for outdoor adventure education (OAE) has to make to pupils learning.
Purpose: This paper is presented in two parts. Part one is an advocacy paper and draws upon the broader discourse around models-based practice to make a case for the development of a pedagogical model for OAE. Drawing upon guidelines for models-based approaches to physical education, this paper considers the theoretical foundation, rationale, review of research findings and major theme that inform the development of a model of OAE.
Conclusions: The selected review of the research suggests that the major impact of OAE is upon the affective domain, particularly in relation to pupils developing a positive self-concept. Learning is also evident in the cognitive and physical domains, but this is secondary to learning in the affective domain. Drawing upon the analysis of the research literature, the major theme for the model is identified as ‘personal growth through adventure’ and ‘OAE’ is suggested as the name of the model. Part two of this paper builds upon these foundations to outline what a pedagogical model for OAE might look like in a secondary school in the UK. 相似文献
Big data, like MOOCs, altmetrics and open access, is a term that has been commonplace in the library community for some time yet, despite its prevalence, many in the library and information sector remain unsure of the relationship between big data and their roles. This editorial explores what big data could mean for the day‐to‐day practice of health library and information workers, presenting examples of big data in action, considering the ethics of accessing big data sets and the potential for new roles for library and information workers. 相似文献
We contrast the current science education reform effort with the reforms of the 1960s and suggest how the current effort could be enhanced. We identify insights from recent research that we believe can inform the reform process, in particular, to reach all science students and also impart a cohesive view of science. We propose an alternative models view of scientific explanation and show how this view would contribute to reforms of (1) course goals, (2) social aspects of science learning, (3) instructional practices, and (4) roles for technology.This paper summarizes discussions and debates that the authors have had over the last few years. The dialogue stems, in part, from our joint participation in the American Educational Research Association Special Interest Group on Education in Science and Technology (AERA SIG:EST) leadership. Conclusion Considering the technology gender gap that exists today, there can be no doubt that our current educational system is not
engaging female students in technology or awakening them to possibilities of the technology industry as a career. Females
are not afraid of computers or lack the ability to master computer skills, but they find the computer environment objectionable
(http : / / www.aauw.org/2000/ techsavvybd.html). Several factors within the educational system heighten these objections
and impede female progression through technology classes. It is these factors that our educational system must address.
Single-sex computer classes offer female students the educational advantages of learning in a comfortable, non-threatening
classroom environment where they are encouraged to enthusiastically participate in classroom discussions and activities (Kumagi,
1995). In these classes, curriculum may be adjusted to reflect the need females to see computers as productivity tools (Caplice,
1994). As a result of positive experiences gained while attending single-sex computer classes, females are more likely to
pursue higher level computer classes.
Although it is possible to argue that single-sex computer classes do not mirror the real world females must contend with once
outside the classroom, they are, however, effective interim interventions to enable females to lessen the current technology
