知识分子的困境和超越——《洪堡的礼物》中充满希望的人文主义

美国著名作家索尔.贝娄是一位对人文主义抱有希望的知识分子,在他的作品中充满了对荒原文化中知识分子的人文关怀。《洪堡的礼物》借助美国20世纪30年代至60年代间洪堡和西特林两代诗人的人生沉浮和人际交往表现了资本主义商业社会中知识分子的生存困境,表现了与大众隔离的精英知识分子走向毁灭的悲剧。小说末尾表达了对知识分子创造力的肯定,传递了具有批判精神的独立的并与世俗融合的知识分子是人文主义希望的思想。     

论王维诗歌的音乐特色对嵇康《琴赋》音乐美学思想的继承

王维是盛唐著名的山水田园诗人,通音律,他的许多音乐诗歌中包含的音乐思想,都和嵇康的音乐美学有着相同之处。以嵇康的《琴赋》为例,其赋中所体现的一些音乐审美思想,如琴乐"和"的思想,即与意合,与天地合,表达自己内心所发的深刻感受、寄情于琴,将琴寄寓深刻情感,宣泄心中情绪的有生命的乐器,以及以琴悟道,追求逍遥闲适、心与道冥的古琴审美观,都在王维音乐诗歌中得到了继承与发扬。

全球综合对地观测系统旨在建立全球性的数据共享框架,为各国组织共享和使用对地观测资源提供技术 解决方案。该系统的通用基础设施包括标准和互操作注册中心、组件和服务注册中心、分布式查询服务中心、资源门 户4 个部分。文章介绍各个组件的作用和相互间的关系,分析向全球综合对地观测系统提供共享资源的类型和技术流 程,提出该系统对国内科学数据共享实践的启示。     

Professional Ideology and Program Conventions: Documentary Development in Independent British Television Production

This article addresses the development process of documentary programs in British television broadcasting and explores how production factors influence the creation of television documentaries. It focuses on the power of the producer to select and present media content and asks how the power relations within the broadcaster–publisher system impact on content and form of new program ideas. It is specifically interested in the negotiation of decision-making processes during the development stage prior to commission, asking how and why specific content is selected for development. Based on the results of an ethnographic study in an independent production company, four program conventions are described that are conditional for the selection of new project ideas. Combined with economic pressures and independents' limited potential for agency, these professional conventions facilitate the reproduction of the familiar over variation.     

Issues in Collecting Post‐Soviet Crime Fiction in Academic Libraries

This article draws attention to a segment of the Russian literary market that is underrepresented in American research library collections, namely light popular fiction and particularly the titles that belong to the detektiv genre. The results of an informal survey of scholars and bibliographers are presented and collection patterns are briefly discussed. Following an exposition of the available collection development tools for Russian light fiction, the article concludes with a call for greater emphasis on collecting these materials in North American research libraries.     

French and Feminine: Hegemonic Masculinity and the Emasculation of John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential Race

French leaders met the September 2002 announcement of preemptive U.S. military action in Iraq with open disapproval. Thereafter, in the build-up to the “Iraq war,” as U.S. military strikes began in 2003 and continued in 2004, France became the target of nationalistic attacks in the United States. Building on this anti-French sentiment, George W. Bush's 2004 presidential campaign used narratives that cast Frenchness as feminine, assigning “Frenchness” to Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry—and thereby characterizing him as unfit for the White House. Specifically, political conservatives sought to strip Kerry of the masculine qualities perceived necessary to serve as president of the United States. Analysis of American political and media discourse from September 2002 to November 2004 shows that the 2004 presidential campaign came to be defined in substantial part by nationalistic and sexist political communications that capitalized upon and reinscribed patterns and norms of hegemonic masculinity while also feminizing and devaluing dissent in times of war.     

Dismantling the Reference Collection

In 2008, the University of Louisville’s (UofL) Ekstrom Library printed reference collection numbered almost 30,000 volumes. Copious collecting and sparse weeding built up the collection during the era before the Internet. There had been considerable reluctance to address its more outdated sections due to competing priorities and inertia. A change of leadership as well as the recognition of changing use patterns had lessened the need for such a large collection. In 2011, three librarians began a title-by-title review process that resulted in an 86% reduction of the reference collection by 2014. This article describes that process, summarizes the results, and discusses the benefits and disadvantages of this approach.     

Authentication of Online State Primary Legal Resources as a Social Justice Issue: The Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act and How It Can Benefit Pro Se Litigants

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) has advocated for years for the adoption of standards to authenticate online state primary legal material. AALL's advocacy led to the enactment of the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA), which, for the first time, provides a framework for and guidance about how state governments can ensure that their official electronic legal information is authenticated, preserved, and permanently accessible to the public. This article provides a brief history of the development of UELMA as context for the argument that the adoption of standards related to the authentication of electronic state legal resources can be considered a social justice issue, particularly for pro se litigants. This article argues that states should adopt UELMA to ensure that these vulnerable users of legal information have access to authentic and trustworthy electronic versions of the laws that govern them.
