The reception of relativity in China

Having introduced the theory of relativity from Japan, the Chinese quickly and enthusiastically embraced it during the May Fourth Movement, virtually without controversy. This unique passion for and openness to relativity, which helped advance the study of theoretical physics in China in the 1930s, was gradually replaced by imported Soviet criticism after 1949. During the Cultural Revolution, radical Chinese ideologues sponsored organized campaigns against Einstein and relativity, inflicting serious damage on Chinese science and scientific education. China's economic reforms in the late 1970s empowered scientists and presented them with the opportunity to rehabilitate Einstein and call for social democracy. Einstein has since become the symbol in China of the unity of science and democracy, the two eminent objectives of the May Fourth Movement that remain to be achieved in full. Using the reception of relativity as a case study, the essay also discusses issues involving the historical study of modern Chinese science.     

河北省老年人体质状况及变化趋势研究

为全面系统掌握河北省老年人体质与健康状况和变化规律,对河北省老年人的身体形态、机能和素质指标进行了统计分析。依据国家体育总局研制的国民体质健康监测标准,对河北省所属的13个地市的60-69岁老年人群采用分层抽样的方法,共抽取4045人进行测试并将测试结果进行对比分析,找出河北省老年人体质在城乡方面存在的差异和体质的变化趋势,从而能够有针对性地制定老年人健身措施。     

蒙古语的bilig、blg、keseg与突厥语的bil-、bl-、kes-——兼谈词根分析法

对比分析蒙古语的 bilig、bo¨ lo¨ g、keseg和突厥语的 bil-、b l-、kes-以及相关的其他一些词 ,补充了一些语言材料 ,提出对于黏着语言而言 ,词根分析法是有效的 ,但它并不是万能的。如果没有充分掌握所比较研究的相关语言的可靠而丰富的材料 ,就使用词根分析法 ,其结论常常事与愿违 ,往往是不可靠的。所以在使用词根分析法时应充分掌握相关语言的可靠且丰富的语言材料作为先决条件才是     

Recognizing the face of Johnny, Suzy, and me: insensitivity to the spacing among features at 4 years of age

Four-year-olds were tested for their ability to use differences in the spacing among features to recognize familiar faces. They were given a storybook depicting multiple views of 2 children. They returned to the laboratory 2 weeks later and used a "magic wand" to play a computer game that tested their ability to recognize the familiarized faces and their own face based on the spacing of features. Children performed at chance levels. Follow-up studies confirmed that they had attended to internal facial features and validated the stimuli. The results contrast with studies showing some sensitivity to the spacing of features in infants and preschool children; multiple mechanisms of face processing may make use of spatial relations and develop at different rates.

Imbalanced free radicals and antioxidant defense systems in schizophrenia： A comparative study

Objective： To examine changes of blood oxidative-antiovidative level in schizophrenic patients and its relationship with clinical symptoms. Methods： Forty-six Chinese patients met DSM-IV （Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-iV） criteria for schizophrenia and fifty age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the present study. Baseline psychiatric symptom severity was assessed with brief psychiatric rating scale, positive and negative syndrome scale on the blood draw day. Fresh blood samples were collected to measure levels of nitric oxide and lipid peroxide in plasma as well as activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase in red blood cells by spectrophotometric assays simultaneously. Results Comparison of the biochemical parameters indicated that the level of nitric oxide and lipid peroxide increased in patient group, which represented a positive correlation with positive scale scores; while the activities of three critical enzymes decreased and showed a negative linear correlation. Conclusion： This study showed that there are dysregulation of free radical metabolism and poor activities of the antioxidant defense systems in schizophrenic patients. Excess free radicals formation may play a critical role in the etiology of schizophrenia. Using antioxidants might be an effective therapeutic approach to partially alleviate or prevent the symptoms of schizophrenia.
