This paper develops a dialogical encounter between northern-inspired theorisations of gender and Vietnam's historical and cultural differentiation identified through the presence of matriarchy in ancient societies and its popularity in folklore and contemporary politics. The article draws on interviews with 12 senior women from 8 universities in Northern and Southern Vietnam. Three main themes are explored: (1) the Vietnamese woman as ‘general of the interior’; (2) the ‘woman behind the throne’; and (3) ‘behind a woman is another woman’. These themes illustrate the distinctiveness of a historically produced Vietnamese gender order as reflected in current university women's experience. By providing insights into the complex dynamics of Vietnamese women's ‘informal power’, as evident in both spheres of home and university, the paper presents a discussion of forms of Vietnamese femininity that contributes to re-theorising Connell's concepts of ‘hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity’. 相似文献

The nineteenth century movement to open higher education to women in England has been the subject of much scholarship in the last two decades. Studies of individual colleges have added to the corpus of research on how women were provided with formal higher education at this time. However, scholars offer differing theories as to why radical changes in the higher education of women took place when they did. Upon completing the Teacher Report Form (TRF; Achenbach, 1991) on a randomly selected child in their current classroom, teachers were surveyed about the approaches or strategies they used to formulate their ratings. In Phase 1, teachers identified eight rating strategies. In Phase 2, a new group of teachers indicated the extent to which they relied on the eight strategies. ABSTRACT This article, emerging from a wider study on the professional development needs of women teachers working in Catholic convent schools in the Republic of Pakistan, explores the perspectives and experiences of school leaders and Principals who developed professional development programmes. This area, which has been under-researched in the professional development literature, addresses the complexities and contradictions that the glocalisation of professional development can create for women teachers in developing world contexts. A social realist approach, using Archer’s morphogenetic framework, was employed to facilitate an exploration of the varied responses that professional development needs produce. The responses of former Principals and school leaders and their efforts to provide professional development for women teachers was captured, and revealed different agential responses. These responses included an acceptance of the realities of the education system in Pakistan and the role of women in that context, a desire to follow the ethos of the Catholic religious Order which was at variance with accepted educational praxis, and the changing expectations of society within Pakistan with reference to education of children. 相似文献

The phenomenon of Professional Doctorates in Australia has come at a time of great change in the higher education sector.
Such change includes an intensified imperative for universities to establish ‘partnerships’ with industry and the professions.

This paper focuses on discursive practices of postgraduate research as a crucial element in constructs of international student
subjectivities when they undertake postgraduate studies in Australian universities. As such, it focuses on a discursive field
emerging within domains of internationalisation, globalisation, and resistance. It examines processes and protocols in a number
of Australian universities’ postgraduate divisions’ practices in the conduct of postgraduate supervision, in the context of
increasing pressures towards internationalisation within frameworks of globalising influences. It takes issue with Western
custom and tradition as privileged within the field of supervision of postgraduate research studies and suggests a model of
postgraduate research supervision as intentional and systematic intervention, based on literature deriving from research in
postgraduate supervision which acknowledges the problematic natures of cultural relationships as to teaching and learning
and knowledge production, and student resistances within these fields. In doing so, it examines issues of discursive practices
and the problematic natures of power relationships in supervisor-supervisee protocols and possibilities suggested by alternative

For several decades researchers have raised questions regarding factors that enable undergraduate students, particularly those from ethnic minority groups living in low socio-economic areas, to persist with their studies to degree completion. Seeking answers to these questions becomes more urgent as universities around the world enrol increasingly diverse cohorts of students. This article reviews the patterns of participation and success for students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education program at one university, distributed across three different locations and attracting different cohorts of students. This provided the university with a unique opportunity to learn about the retention and success of diverse cohorts, particularly those traditionally under-represented at undergraduate-level study. At least 75% of students in the under-represented groups passed their courses. Surprisingly the pass rates of students at the three campuses were similar, despite dissimilarities in ethnicity, socio-economic status and previous academic success. 相似文献

Though viewed as second-class until fairly recently, Canada’s system for providing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) now provides relevant post-secondary education that meets the needs of highly skilled professionals in all job categories. As the system evolved, it changed the public view of skills education. This article analyses four lessons from that experience: on the importance of decentralised authority, close partnership with employers, attention to the needs of learners, and innovative leadership and language.
