English language learning difficulty of korean students in a Philippine Multidisciplinary University

This qualitative study analyzed the English language learning difficulties of 13 purposively chosen Korean students relative
to their sociolinguistic competence, motivation in using the English language, and cultural factors. Interview responses were
transcribed, categorized and thematised according to saliency, meaning and homogeneity. The findings of the study disclosed
that, on the whole, while the subjects never had the opportunity to use the English language in Korea, they use it almost
everywhere in the Philippines. Their difficulties exist both in daily conversation and in the academic setting. Such difficulties
are attributable to both the subjects’ and the Filipinos’ different entry points in the learning and use of English. Despite
cultural barriers in communication, however, the Koreans studying in the Philippines are instrumentally motivated to learn

In recent years there have been many studies on learners developing conceptions of natural phenomena. However, so far there
have been few attempts to investigate how the characteristics of the learners and their environment influence such conceptions.
This study began with an attempt to use an instrument developed by McCarthy (1981) to describe learners in Malaysian primary
schools. This proved inappropriate as Asian primary classrooms do not provide the same kind of environment as US classrooms.
It was decided to develop a learning style checklist to suit the local context and which could be used to describe differences
between learners which teachers could appreciate and use. The checklist included four dimensions — perceptual, process, self-confidence
and motivation. The validated instrument was used to determine the learning style preferences of primary four pupils in Penang,
Malaysia.
Later, an analysis was made regarding the influence of learning environment and learning styles on conceptual understanding
in the topics of food, respiration and excretion. This study was replicated in the Philippines with the purpose of investigating
the relationship between learning styles and achievement in science, where the topics of food, respiration and excretion have
been taken up. A number of significant relationships were observed in these two studies.

ResumenEl presente trabajo describe un programa para el entrenamiento en la solución de problemas que implican una sola operación básica (suma, resta, multiplicación y división) y presenta resultados de su aplicación a tres sujetos con las operaciones de suma y división. Otro aspecto del trabajo es la investigación del efecto del uso de calculadoras manuales en este tipo de tareas. Los resultados indican que ta aceleración del dominio de la mecánica de las operaciones obtenida con el uso de calculadoras permite a los sujetos un dominio conceptual de los problemas correspondientes a estas operaciones al menos tan bueno como el alcanzado en el caso de problemas y operaciones efectuados manualmente, dentro de los limites de los objetivos contemplados por el programa. 相似文献

In the academic year 2010–2011, Spain finished the process of introducing the regulatory changes derived from the Bologna Declaration and the new European Space for Higher Education (ESHE). These changes have implied the updating of university degrees’ structure as well as the inclusion of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). This paper describes the process of adaptation of two basic first-semester core subjects of computer engineering to one of the basic aspects of the ESHE, the adoption of the ECTS. The process described in the paper was developed in the framework of the pilot plan undertaken by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona between 2005 and 2010. The proposed course design implies a better coordination and integration of the contents of two different subjects that students follow simultaneously, and it is based on the combination of project-based learning and cooperative learning. After the experience finished, an extended quantitative and qualitative analysis of the academic results over the five-year period has shown an improvement in the students’ learning outcomes. 相似文献

The issue draws together a selection of articles that analyze these open debates at a deeper level. PISA, which was launched by OECD, is one of the most significant and successful initiatives on which education systems have recently collectively embarked. However, although it is a well‐coordinated international programme, its reception differs according to country. There is therefore a need to analyse specific national circumstances in order to gain a deeper understanding of the undertaking as a whole. This article specifically considers Spain's participation in PISA and focuses on a number of aspects: a) the expectations created when it joined the programme, in parallel to the implementation of its own national education evaluation system; b) the impact PISA has had, both in the media and in political and discursive spheres; and c) the technical and scientific debates generated in Spanish academic media. Finally, it is argued that, in the last few years, PISA has met with a certain disenchantment among specialists and the public opinion because of its limitations as a ranking tool, the difficulty in explaining its findings, and its inability to prescribe education policies that are suitable for very different contexts. 相似文献

Electronic government (e-Government) systems are becoming an essential strategic tool in the delivery of e-Government-to-Business services (e-G2B). The purpose of this research is to explore direct and indirect effects of trust in online services on the satisfaction of the e-Government service users and other perceptions such as e-G2B system effectiveness and the operational effectiveness of organizations. Based on a sample of e-G2B service users from Saudi Arabia, our preliminary findings suggest that the effects of trust on user satisfaction are mediated by e-G2B system effectiveness measures (e.g., System Quality, Service Quality, and Information Quality) and by operational effectiveness. In addition, we find that operational effectiveness and information quality are the most important drivers of user satisfaction. In contrast to previous research, our results show a negative relationship between trust in online services and service quality and suggest that this finding may have important implications for theory and practice. 相似文献
