"Ask A Librarian": the experiences of four hospital libraries

The librarians at four hospital libraries describe the electronic reference service, "Ask A Librarian," offered at their institutions. The hospitals are vastly different in size and in number of library staff, and offer the "Ask A Librarian" service to different clientele. The article illustrates that both large hospitals with a large library staff and small hospitals with a solo librarian and some volunteers can offer this type of service.

Objektorientierter Entwurf eines flexiblen Workflow-Management-Systems

Zusammenfassung.   Dieser Beitrag enth?lt die wesentlichen konzeptionellen überlegungen zur Entwicklung eines flexiblen Workflow-Management-Systems. Ausgehend von einer Diskussion m?glicher Modellierungsalternativen wird unter Verwendung objektorientierter Modellierungstechniken ein Workflow-Meta-Schema entwickelt, das die relevanten Entit?ten klassifiziert und ihre Beziehungen abbildet. Anhand eines Beispiels werden die getroffenen Entwurfentscheidungen ausführlich begründet. Schlie?lich werden Zust?nde und Zustandsüberg?nge von Workflow-Instanzen beschrieben, und es wird diskutiert, wie dynamische Ver?nderungen von Workflows zur Laufzeit durchgeführt werden k?nnen, um laufende Workflows dynamisch an ver?nderte Umweltbedingungen anzupassen. Exploring the link between culture and strategy in media organisations: The cases of the BBC and CNN

Abstract

This study employs participant observation methodology to examine the U.S. broadcast industry's cognitions of its external environment. Previous research has documented a tendency among industry participants to operate under outdated mental models of their environment. This tendency ‐ labeled ‘cognitive inertia’ ‐ provides the analytical framework for this study. The results provide indications that broadcasters operate under what appear to be outdated mental models of their external environment, with broadcasters appearing to pay inadequate attention to competing program sources and failing to account for the changing demographic composition of the television audience. However, these conclusions are tempered by the broadcast industry's dual‐product marketplace characteristics, wherein cognitions that would appear to reflect inadequate assessment of the content market may in fact reasonably reflect the contemporary realities of the audience market.     

Peer feedback content and sender's competence level in academic writing revision tasks: Are they critical for feedback perceptions and efficiency?

Peer-feedback content is a core component of peer assessment, but the impact of various contents of feedback is hardly studied. Participants in the study were 89 graduate students who were assigned to four experimental and a control group. Experimental groups received a scenario with concise general (CGF) or elaborated specific (ESF) feedback by a high or low competent peer. ESF by a high competent peer was perceived as more adequate, but led to more negative affect. Students in CGF groups outperformed ESF groups during treatment. Groups with a low competent peer outperformed groups with a high competent peer during the posttest. Feedback perceptions and performance were uncorrelated.
