The development of private (non-state) higher education institutions in Poland has been a phenomenon of increasing importance since 1990. It is a paradox of their existence, particularly in small towns with no previous tradition of higher education, that they have been more successful than the state higher education institutions in educating young people of working-class and peasant background, even though they charge tuition fees. In many ways, the private higher education institutions are more responsive to the demands of an economy in transition than are the state institutions, and they tend to operate more efficiently. Also, they have been rapid to adopt the "Mode 2" variety of knowledge generation. The creation of private higher education institutions has been a stimulus to regional development in Poland. 相似文献

AbstractThe world of radical football fans across Europe is dominated by anti-system groups. While their sympathies in the west of the continent are mostly leftist, the ultras in the east tend to display right-wing attitudes. Poland makes a particularly interesting case in point, as the most intensive and emotional ideological criticism of the processes of ‘transformation’ and ‘modernisation’ is to be observed at the stadiums. As a result of historical developments, opposition against the system in the country can only be expressed using Catholic–patriotic symbolism, which in the case of collective actions of radical football supporters has produced sociocultural and aesthetic effects not to be found anywhere else in Europe. 相似文献

It is well documented that academic achievement of students from families of low socioeconomic status (SES) tends to be below their more socially advantaged peers. Several studies have identified factors and conditions that facilitate academic success for disadvantaged students (i.e., promote academic resilience). However, one of the main criticisms of this body of research is in the set of variables that explain academic success for low-SES students and which is not very different from the variables that would explain academic success for all students. The objectives of this article are dual: firstly, to identify factors and conditions associated with academic success, regardless of student SES, and secondly, to identify factors and conditions associated with academic resilience, that is, exclusively for low-SES students. To this end, we used data from Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, and Japan in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011. The study sample covered 23,354 students in 720 schools in the five countries. The strategy for analysis was driven by fit of logistic regression models, first predicting the probability of academic success and then subsequent identification of variables significant as predictors for success within the pool of low-SES students. Results indicated that variables, such as positive student attitude to mathematics, teacher confidence in student performance and the test language being spoken at home, were associated with greater chances of academic success. High academic expectations and time spent on mathematics at home demonstrated a differential effect between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students in Singapore. In Korea, being male (gender) and in Taipei, low levels of bullying at school, increased the likelihood of resilience. Results suggested that interventions impacting behavior reflected in differentially associated variables could help disadvantaged students to become academically resilient. 相似文献

The drying shrinkage accumulation from exposure of freshly prepared gesso layers to relative humidity (RH) cycles was determined to elucidate the mechanism of craquelure pattern formation on panel paintings. The progresive drying shrinkage of the gesso is observed only under the cycles going to high RH levels which bring about transitions from brittle to ductile state of the material. The first incidence of fracture on the gesso layers occurred after a limited number of cycles ranging between a few and 100 for a range of layer thickness between 0.5 and 1?mm. The craquelure patterns stabilised also after a limited number of cycles (30 for the 1-mm thick layer). Upon increase in the gesso layer thickness, the strength of the layer is reduced and the spacing of shrinkage fractures increases. The study demonstrated that craquelure patterns, mimicking historical ones, can be realistically produced in laboratory conditions. Such studies would provide useful information for preparing specimens simulating historic panel paintings and would inform the current efforts on automatic, computer-aided classifications of crack formations on paintings. 相似文献

This article analyzes the historical and political context of Holocaust education, and its implementation in Polish schools.
Perceptions of the Holocaust continue to change, influenced by Poland’s social and political situation. The Polish historical
context is quite specific; it includes the long history of Poles and Jews as neighbours, with local resentments and animosities,
and the Polish sense of being special victims of World War II and observers of the Nazis’ “final solution to the Jewish question”.
These different types of social awareness have neutralized the remembrance of the Holocaust and its presence in school education.
Similarly, the perception of the Holocaust in Polish schools has changed. Initially seen as just one element in the Nazis’
crimes against everyone in Poland, it is now understood as a singular phenomenon, the unparalleled mass extermination of the
Jewish nation. From this perspective, I analyze Holocaust education, and its status in the curriculum and in pedagogical practice.
I also report on my own research on the practice and meanings of Holocaust education in Polish public schools. Holocaust education
should not be limited to the pedagogical transfer of remembrance but should also be associated with transforming social awareness

In recent times, governments have become increasingly aware of the significance of shaping the international image of a state. However, the multidimensional character of the state’s brand causes difficulties in measuring it. The aim of the paper is to investigate whether good performance in sport shapes the brand of a nation, thus, making sport a tool of nation branding. The paper is both theoretical and empirical. Theoretically, a conceptualization of nation branding has been presented. The empirical part is focused on analyzing the influence of the level of sport on the international image of states. The level of sports was measured on the basis of the states’ achievements at the Summer Olympics, and on the international image of 10 selected countries with the use of available data concerning a states’ brand. 相似文献
