Abstract This paper investigates the meaningful choices in intonation made by young children. A category system for classifying choices is outlined and an experiment is reported in which randomly selected groups of 41/2‐5 year‐olds heard and retold stories in different situations. Results indicate that all groups distinguished narrative from other forms of discourse and drew upon intonation resources appropriately. Differences were found between recalling a story with pictures and one without, suggesting that these are different cognitive tasks and that children make different selections from choices available to them. 相似文献

Abstract An attempt was made to develop reading and spelling skills in a nine year‐old boy who was a severe underachiever in both areas, over an 18 month treatment period. A structured and systematic approach was used with provision of incentives via token reinforcement which could be exchanged for back‐up reinforcers of the child's choice. The remedial reading programme was successful in developing systematic reading strategies which were applied to the decoding of new words. These gains generalised outside the tutoring situation and were reflected in performance on a standardised test of reading. The spelling programme was less successful although the goal of lessening the disparity between spelling age and chronological age was achieved. Follow‐up at 14 months indicated continued gains although the rate of progress was considerably slower following the cessation of regular remedial teaching particularly in the area of spelling. Patrons of map collections often have specific, geographically-based, requests for maps and the information they provide. Map librarians can often meet these needs through personal knowledge of the scope of their collections. For larger collections, this method is unsustainable. To assess the relative contribution of dynamic and summary features of vocal fundamental frequency (f0 ) to the statistical discrimination of pragmatic categories in infant-directed speech, 49 mothers were instructed to use their voice to get their 4-month-old baby's attention, show approval, and provide comfort. Vocal f0 from 621 tokens was extracted using a Computerized Speech Laboratory and custom software. Dynamic features were measured with convergent methods (visual judgment and quantitative modeling of f0 contour shape). Summary features were f0 mean, standard deviation, and duration. Dynamic and summary features both individually and in combination statistically discriminated between each of the pragmatic categories. Classification rates were 69% and 62% in initial and cross-validation DFAs, respectively. 相似文献

This article synthesizes seven peer-reviewed articles that investigate the varying roles of social networking sites, cyber peers, and social capital in the information seeking behavior of adolescents. The theoretical approaches of Brenda Dervin, Elfreda Chatman, and Carol Kuhlthau are instrumental in establishing the basis for the research in terms of information seeking behavior.
