Religious defiance that results in publicly leaving religion (apostasy) is an enormous taboo in Arab communities despite the recent surge in apostates’ numbers. Drawing from research on stigma, apostasy, authorship, and critical studies, I explore how a transnational Arab community, which emerges in the crossfire among democratizing politics of self-expression, regulation of public identity by digital technologies, and vast opposition networks, uses digital technologies and the politics of naming to destigmatize its identity. Extending the literatures of stigma and apostasy to ex-Muslims, I conclude that this case reveals religious and nonreligious Arabs’ common struggle against violence and the need for structural changes to protect digital technologies’ emancipatory potential. 相似文献

Two studies were conducted to test the link between numerical distinctiveness, stereotype threat and mathematical performance
among women. In the first study, stereotype threat was measured with a stereotype activation task. Women in a solo, non-solo
or control condition completed word fragments and a mathematical activity. Solo women, rather than their non-solo counterparts
showed mathematical performance deficits. Evidence did not support the mediating role of stereotype activation. In the second
study, stereotype anxiety was assessed. According to analyses, solo women reported greater stereotype-related anxiety than
non-solo women. A link between stereotype anxiety and mathematical performance deficits was also uncovered. Finally, mathematical
underperformance was associated with greater interest in feminine activities. Strategies to buffer the effects of stereotype

Broadcast network newsrooms are powerful gatekeepers, setting cultural standards and attitudes for America at large via the stories they tell and the images they project. In 1968, the federal Kerner Commission chastised American news media for ignoring race, and seeing through the “white man’s eyes” and speaking from “the white perspective.” Grounded in critical and cultural studies and organizational theory, this study analyzes the experiences of 23 post-Civil Rights generation black journalists working in broadcast newsrooms who continue to struggle against anti-black cultural norms and attitudes at great physical, psychological and financial cost. 相似文献

The writing skills of 286 children (157 female and 129 male) were studied by comparing name writing and letter writing scores
from preschool to kindergarten with letter and word reading scores over the same time period. Two rubrics for scoring writing
were compared to determine if scores based on multiple components (i.e., letter formation, orientation on the vertical axis,
left–right orientation, and correct letter sequencing) would better reflect differences in children’s writing knowledge in
preschool and kindergarten than rubrics composed of one component (i.e., letter formation only). While developmental changes
in writing scores were found, little additional information was provided by multiple component scoring rubrics compared to
the single component rubric. Letter writing scores were more strongly related to letter and word reading scores than name
writing scores but neither writing score was predictive of growth. Implications of the findings for intentional/systematic

Respiratory muscle fatigue has been reported following short bouts of high-intensity exercise, and prolonged, moderate-intensity exercise, as evidenced by decrements in inspiratory and expiratory mouth pressures. However, links to functionally relevant outcomes such as breathing effort have been lacking. The present study examined dyspnoea and leg fatigue during a treadmill marathon in nine experienced runners. Maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure, peak inspiratory and expiratory flow, forced vital capacity, and forced expiratory volume in one second were assessed before, immediately after, and four and 24 hours after a marathon. During the run, leg effort was rated higher than respiratory effort from 18 through 42 km (P < 0.05). Immediately after the marathon, there were significant decreases in maximal inspiratory pressure and peak inspiratory flow (from 118 +/- 20 cm H(2)O and 6.3 +/- 1.4 litres x s(-1) to 100 +/- 22 cm H(2)O and 4.9 +/- 1.5 litres x s(-1) respectively; P < 0.01), while expiratory function remained unchanged. Leg maximum voluntary contraction force was significantly lower post-marathon. Breathing effort correlated significantly with leg fatigue (r = 0.69), but not inspiratory muscle fatigue. Our results confirm that prolonged moderate-intensity exercise induces inspiratory muscle fatigue. Furthermore, they suggest that the relative intensity of inspiratory muscle work during exercise makes some contribution to leg fatigue. 相似文献

This qualitative study describes the physical and verbal interactions of rural children and their parents regarding reading
books aloud. The participants’ attitudes and beliefs about sharing storybooks are also explored. The theoretical framework
is based upon Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Model. One interview was conducted with each participant and video recorded. An
observation of one book sharing session for each dyad was conducted and video recorded. The Adult/Child Interactive Reading Inventory (ACIRI) (DeBruin-Parecki 2004, 2007) was used during analysis of the observations. Narrative analysis was utilized. Themes and categories emerged from the data.
The self-report of each participant was compared to the observation. Overall, the interview data were in alignment with the

Social work plays a key role in engaging with clients and communities directly affected by housing insecurity and homelessness, and advocating for the right to safe and affordable housing. This article describes methodologies of the Point-in-Time Count and Homeless Management Information Systems and proposes strategies for integrating additional content around homelessness into the social work curriculum in research courses and beyond. This integration can meet student needs regarding experiential research, as well as agency and community needs for effective collection and use of data.
