Objectives: Map of Medicine is an evidence‐based online clinical knowledge resource. Procured at significant cost by healthcare providers in the UK, Sweden and Denmark, it is important to establish the beneficial impact that investment has had on healthcare practise and, ultimately, on patient outcomes. The objective of this study is to review the evidence for the impact of the Map of Medicine on clinical practice. Methods: A systematic review of peer‐reviewed and grey literature was conducted. Nine healthcare databases, Google Scholar and Google were searched for articles containing the terms ‘map of medicine’. Results: The search identified 133 articles. Eleven of the articles identified met the inclusion criteria. The main finding of the study is the paucity of evidence available on the impact of the Map of Medicine and the variable quality of that which does exist. There are some encouraging early indications for the Map of Medicine as a tool within service redesign, leading to an increase in appropriate referrals to secondary care, decreased patient waiting times and considerable cost savings. Conclusion: Further research with study designs that can generate high quality evidence for the impact of Map of Medicine is essential in order to support policy decisions.  相似文献

Over 40 per cent of academic staff in Higher Education and an unspecified number of support and part time staff, are employed on fixed term contracts. This article reports the findings of a study into the experiences of academic staff on such contracts. It argues that temporary employees' contractual status affects their ability to perform effectively and reduces their level of commitment to the organisation. It considers the implication of these findings and argues that while some of the factors which have prompted the use of temporary contracts may lie beyond the control of Higher Education institutions, universities could reduce their negative effects by reviewing the way in which temporary staff, who now make up almost half of the academic population, are managed.  相似文献

In developing graduates for the knowledge society lecturers in higher education may seek to strengthen links between research and teaching. Much of the previous work on the research-teaching nexus is within traditional universities and subject disciplines. In aiming to deepen understanding of the research and teaching nexus this paper focuses on the academic identities of higher education lecturers working in newer higher education institutions and in the professional fields of nursing and of teacher education. A qualitative study, informed by professional identity construction as an ecological concept, was conducted. The findings align with previous studies concerning similarities between lecturers in nurse and teacher education, but they contrast with previous studies concerning differences between these two groups of lecturers. Similarities include the priority given by professional educators to their responsibility for preparing new clinical practitioners; the research-led model as the lecturers’ main approach to the research-teaching nexus; and their difficulties in coping with current demands in academic work. Differences between the two groups of lecturers include the way that ‘practitioner identity’ is positioned within their current academic identities and the way that they position initial education within the wider professional field. These differences indicate different kinds of connections between teaching and research. The paper proposes an ecological approach to understanding the research-teaching nexus.  相似文献

In this article we argue that despite methodological and analytical advancements in the field of social class research, these developments have not led to a wholehearted discussion about class positionality and situatedness in relation to interviewer–participant dynamics. Despite—or perhaps due to—this methodological gap, there remains an unspoken expectation that class matching, particularly when investigating working‐class groups and practices, is desirable as it engenders empathy on the part of the interviewer which allows for openness on the part of the participant. The team of four interviewers reflect upon their varying experiences of conducting interviews about class with a group of middle‐ and working‐class students at university, arguing that even if class matching between participant and researcher were possible, shared class position does not necessarily equate with similar life experiences, or enable a strong rapport nor a more ethical analysis or understanding of working‐class people's lives. We explore some of the complexities regarding the class‐related positions of the researchers and the participants and consequently advocate that class researchers engage in reflexive practices in order to explore the myriad ways in which the researcher's own class history and current class position both advantage and disadvantage the research process, often in unpredictable ways.  相似文献

Understanding the relationship between form and function is critical for appreciating biology at the molecular level. This feature explores online materials that connect molecular structures with their functional relevance.Cells are bustling factories with diverse and prolific arrays of molecular machinery. Remarkably, this machinery self-organizes to carry out the complex biochemical activities characteristic of life. When Watson and Crick published the structure of DNA, they noted that DNA base pairing creates a double-stranded form that provides a means of accurately copying the genetic information. Understanding this link between form and function is important for understanding the basis of any biological activity. At the most basic level, a biomolecule''s function is dictated by its structure. The molecule''s shape and chemical properties facilitate interactions with other molecules and determine its role in the cell. Protein function depends on the precise folding of encoded linear stretches of amino acids into three-dimensional shapes. Protein misfolding can lead to various disease states. In this review, we explore engaging online resources that highlight the connection between structure and function in biomolecules. These resources are particularly relevant for instruction at the advanced high school and undergraduate biology levels.  相似文献

In 1941 Australian tabloid journalist Dorothy Gordon Jenner was caught up in the Japanese siege of Hong Kong and was incarcerated in the Stanley Internment Camp. During her internment Jenner kept a clandestine record of daily life written in pencil on Bronco brand toilet paper and kept hidden in the heels of her shoes. To date her fragmented diary and notes have defied analysis. This paper provides a reading of Jenner's personal wartime testimonio through the frame of tabloid journalism to expose how the tabloid genre—Jenner's stock-in-trade as a journalist before the war—became the framework for her personal testimony during World War II. By interpreting Jenner's private diary and notes as testimonio journalism this paper exposes the flow of the tabloid vernacular style of journalism between private and public discourses.  相似文献

Italian broadcasting has long been terrestrial. Its main shortcomings (spectrum chaos, non-enforcement of the law and market concentration) were considered not conducive to a rapid and reliable diffusion of digital terrestrial television (DTT). In 2005, the private free to air duopolist Mediaset entered the pay television market with an offer on DTT and, within a few years, has proved to be a fast-growing operator, threatening the established satellite incumbent (Sky). This evidence apparently challenges the received wisdom of the literature and the business practice. With the aim of explaining these peculiar market dynamics, this article examines the operators' strategies, controlling for the institutional side and the policy. A few main points stand out. First, the enduring spectrum chaos has not significantly hampered Mediaset, nor was spectrum a binding constraint, thanks to biased regulation. Second, the entrant crafted a coherent and gradual “premium content” strategy, fine-tuning its evolution in accordance with the platform diffusion. Third, the public policy for digital TV served as a supporting complement to the private strategy. In particular, being biased, it favored the diffusion of DTT over rival platforms, and benefited its main pay-TV offer. Overall, our analysis uncovers a complex and unique national case, rooted in an effective, albeit contentious, public–private interplay. Consequently, the Italian case does not convincingly challenge the received wisdom on DTT.  相似文献

Tertiary education has seen a shift toward pedagogies that make use of social interaction. As part of the shift, teachers have considered re-framing their role in the teaching process, and giving more attention to ways in which knowledge construction amongst students can be supported. While many online technologies are well positioned to support interactivity between students, the use of these tools does not necessarily ensure that the social interaction is of a type that guarantees learning will take place. This paper employs an “ecology of resources” perspective (Luckin 10.1016/j.compedu.2007.09.018, 2008) to explore the experiences of teachers and selected students from three tertiary-level contexts as they engaged with interactive learning tasks mediated by asynchronous online technologies. The data presented in the study were generated primarily from accounts and semi-structured interviews, and presented teachers’ beliefs about how the learners could operate as knowledge resources for each other, while they themselves were somewhat ‘epistemically distant’. In contrast, the data suggest that the experiences of students and tutors were vastly different. The students represented themselves and others as inadequate resources, perceiving that the expertise to construct knowledge was not present in the student group. These observations highlight the importance of building resource-rich learning environments, enabling access to expert performances through blended settings, and nurturing a perception of capability between students.  相似文献
