Journal ranking is becoming more important in assessing the quality of academic research. Several indices have been suggested for this purpose, typically on the basis of a citation graph between the journals. We follow an axiomatic approach and find an impossibility theorem: any self-consistent ranking method, which satisfies a natural monotonicity property, should depend on the level of aggregation. Our result presents a trade-off between two axiomatic properties and reveals a dilemma of aggregation. 相似文献

Many studies have shown that young males of Turkish descent are disadvantaged in terms of educational opportunity in Germany. In this, the lower educational successes of children from migrant families are neither simple effects of lower levels of social capital nor of lower educational aspiration. With the aim of tracing unexplained mechanisms of the intergenerational transmission of educational chances, the interdependency of educational success or failure of young men of Turkish descent and adolescent processes of detachment and family relations were reconstructed using an intergenerational research design. This shows the major importance of parents?? processing of their immigration experiences in the context of discrimination and disadvantage, the effects of this on the parent-child-relationship, especially in adolescence, and the impact of intergenerational dynamics on the realization, processing and effects of differing educational aspirations and careers. 相似文献

Outdoor educational programmes are generally believed to be a suitable alternative to conventional biology settings that improve participants' environmental attitudes and knowledge. Here we examine whether outdoor educational programmes focused solely on practical work with plants influence participants' knowledge of and attitudes towards plants. It was found that mean scores of participants' attitudes towards and knowledge of plants significantly increased after the outdoor programme. These effects remained significant even after three months' post‐testing. No similar patterns were found in the control group. Interestingly, the proportion of participants who liked biology as a school subject also significantly increased after the outdoor programme in the experimental group. Females showed better knowledge of plants than males, but attitudes towards plants were similar between genders. Having a garden at home was not associated with better knowledge or attitudes towards plants. Our results reveal that outdoor programmes significantly relieve ‘plant blindness’ and make biology more attractive to pupils. 相似文献

In this commentary, we evaluate the methodology of Udell, Dorey, and Wynne’s (Learning & Behavior, in press) experiment in controlling for environmental factors and argue that their conclusion is not supported. In particular, we
emphasise that comparative studies on dogs and wolves need to ensure that both species enjoyed the same rearing history, are
comparable in age, and have the same experience with the testing conditions. We also argue that the utilisation of shelter
dogs does not control for genetic effects on social behaviour. Finally, we propose a synergetic model to account for both

This study focuses on the transformation of pro-Beijing labour education in the socio-political context of Hong Kong. It explores
the reasons that Hong Kong pro-Beijing educators initiated Workers’ Night Schools for adults; the organisation of schools
in many locales and the transformation of labour education that workers received in these educational settings. The history
of the development of this organization is deeply intertwined with the politics of education and the social transformation
of that period. That development provides an understanding of how the pro-Beijing educators constructed an alternative culture
that opposed the colonial government and was later transformed to serve as a pro-hegemonic force in the post-1997 era. In
addition, rapid and widespread changes were taking place throughout Hongkongese life. Labour education was once viewed as
a radical project to enhance working-class’s anti-hegemonic consciousness, socialist practices and political activism in the
colonial Hong Kong. The introduction of international standards, global benchmarks for career and technical education and
the transfer of sovereignty have created a new situation forcing these pro-Beijing educators to respond quickly. This article
aims to see how the pro-Beijing educators related to international standard for vocational training and how the schools transforms

The effects of treadmill running on impact acceleration were examined together with the interaction between running surface and runner's fatigue state. Twenty recreational runners (11 men and 9 women) ran overground and on a treadmill (at 4.0 m/s) before and after a fatigue protocol consisting of a 30-minute run at 85% of individual maximal aerobic speed. Impact accelerations were analysed using two lightweight capacitive uniaxial accelerometers. A two-way repeated-measure analysis of variance showed that, in the pre-fatigue condition, the treadmill running decreased head and tibial peak impact accelerations and impact rates (the rate of change of acceleration), but no significant difference was observed between the two surfaces in shock attenuation. There was no significant difference in acceleration parameters between the two surfaces in the post-fatigue condition. There was a significant interaction between surface (treadmill and overground) and fatigue state (pre-fatigue and post-fatigue). In particular, fatigue when running overground decreased impact acceleration severity, but it had no such effect when running on the treadmill. The effects of treadmill running and the interaction need to be taken into account when interpreting the results of studies that use a treadmill in their experimental protocols, and when prescribing physical exercise. 相似文献

While participation in the activities like bondage, domination, submission/sadism, masochism that fall under the umbrella term BDSM is widespread, stigma surrounding BDSM poses risks to practitioners who wish to disclose their interest. We examined risk factors involved with disclosure to posit how sex education might diffuse stigma and warn of risks. Semi-structured interviews asked 20 adults reporting an interest in BDSM about their disclosure experiences. Most respondents reported their BDSM interests starting before age 15, sometimes creating a phase of anxiety and shame in the absence of reassuring information. As adults, respondents often considered BDSM central to their sexuality, thus disclosure was integral to dating. Disclosure decisions in nondating situations were often complex considerations balancing desire for appropriateness with a desire for connection and honesty. Some respondents wondered whether their interests being found out would jeopardize their jobs. Experiences with stigma varied widely. 相似文献

This paper introduces an empirical study that examines how teachers evaluate pupils?? responses. The study draws on research undertaken at four secondary schools in the Czech Republic. It transpires that feedback has a stable position in the structure of communication; however, it is used only to verify pupils?? responses and not to elaborate them. An important feature of feedback is its implicitness and near-zero content value resulting from the teachers?? preferences to avoid explicit evaluative comments.
