Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between ventilatory adaptation and performance during altitude training at 2700?m. Methods: Seven elite cyclists (age: 21.2?±?1.1?yr, body mass: 69.9?±?5.6?kg, height 176.3?±?4.9?cm) participated in this study. A hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) test and a submaximal exercise test were performed at sea level prior to the training camp and again after 15 d at altitude (ALT15). Ventilation (VE), end-tidal carbon-dioxide partial pressure (PETCO2) and oxyhaemoglobin saturation via pulse oximetry (SpO2) were measured at rest and during submaximal cycling at 250?W. A hill climb (HC) performance test was conducted at sea level and after 14 d at altitude (ALT14) using a road of similar length (5.5–6?km) and gradient (4.8–5.3%). Power output was measured using SRM cranks. Average HC power at ALT14 was normalised to sea level power (HC%). Multiple regression was used to identify significant predictors of performance at altitude. Results: At ALT15, there was a significant increase in resting VE (10.3?±?1.9 vs. 12.2?±?2.4?L·min?1) and HVR (0.34?±?0.24 vs. 0.71?±?0.49?L·min?1·%?1), while PETCO2 (38.4?±?2.3 vs. 32.1?±?3.3?mmHg) and SpO2 (97.9?±?0.7 vs. 94.0?±?1.7%) were reduced (P?.05). Multiple regression revealed ΔHVR and exercise VE at altitude as significant predictors of HC% (adjusted r2?=?0.913; P?=?0.003). Conclusions: Ventilatory acclimatisation occurred during a 2 wk altitude training camp in elite cyclists and a higher HVR was associated with better performance at altitude, relative to sea level. The TV-viewing behavior of 99 families with young children was videotaped by automated time-lapse recording equipment placed in homes for 10-day periods. The 99 families comprised 460 individuals from infants to 62 years of age. Time-sample analyses of 4,672 hours of recordings indicated that the TV-viewing room contained no viewers 14.7% of the time that the TV was on. There were no age trends in time spent with television. Percent visual attention to television increased greatly across the preschool years, leveled off at about 70% during the school-age years, and declined in adulthood. Men looked at the TV more than women. There were no significant correlations between time spent with TV and percent of visual attention to TV. The increase in visual attention to television during the preschool years is consistent with the theory that TV program comprehensibility is a major determination of attention in young children. 相似文献

Active involvement in college activities is linked to a host of student development outcomes, including personal growth, achievement
and satisfaction. Yet, to date there has been too little attention to how social class shapes campus involvement. Through
an analysis of survey data of students attending a single elite university and a national sample of students at highly selective,
private universities, I consider how class background is associated with participation in college activities and satisfaction
with campus social life. Reflecting a history of class-based exclusion, the typical elite university student enters college
from an affluent household, although distinct class fractions help conceal significant gaps and differences across the college
years. Dominant class students devote considerable time to social and recreational activities, while middle and subordinate
class students are more likely to have a part-time job to pay for college expenses. This pattern of campus involvement explains

Bullying is a serious and escalating problem in public schools across America. Each day, thousands of students face taunts and humiliation stemming from bullies. Bullying victims experience emotional and psychological problems that may persist for a lifetime. Other victims commit suicide or retaliate against bullies out of fear for their own safety. Because the courts presume that schools are safe places, teachers and administrators have a leading responsibility to protect students from the harmful behavior exhibited by bullies. They are expected to foresee that bullying is a harmful activity and initiate appropriate steps to eliminate it. This article discusses the magnitude of the problem of bullying in public schools and the threat of liability for school personnel who fail to respond to bullying incidents.
