This article provides practical tips on how to build your personal collection of materials on Indigenous topics. Before taking steps in acquiring content, consider the place of print and electronic material in your life as a librarian and Indigenous person. Rephrase foundational documents such as collection development policies, Ranganathan's laws of library science, and Saricks' appeal factors in ways that reflect your Indigenous worldview. Review the steps you take and might take to build this collection, starting with assessing what resources you already have access to, and develop your list of ten authors to watch.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In 2013, we conducted a survey of faculty and recent graduates from graduate schools of library and information science (LIS). The purpose of this study was to assess student (as represented by recent graduates) and faculty awareness and opinions about incorporating content about Indigenous ways into their curricula. In short, we found that recent graduates and their faculty were both aware of Indigenous ways but sought varying ways to inform themselves. Faculty believed that they covered this topic in the classes they taught, while graduates reported that they did not hear of Indigenous ways in their course work. Of the courses that LIS students take in their programs, a class on collection management provides a useful platform through which to explore Indigenous identity and access and care of Indigenous cultural knowledge.  相似文献

One of the most versatile and dynamic career paths available to information specialists is that of UX or user experiences. Graduate students seeking careers in UX may benefit by enrolling in and completing a basic reference class. Characteristics of photoresists used in microlithography are highlighted. The microstructure of the matrix polymer used in these photoresists is critical for ensuring good lithographic performance and the same can be evaluated by using modern NMR spectroscopic techniques. This article describes, and argues for an integration of behavioural methods to deal with a wide range of persons suffering from disabilities regardless of age.Practitioners require simple straightforward practical and effective strategies, which can help them to select appropriate social, behavioural, and educational strategies along with effective programme components. These are relevant to those who suffer from a wide range of disabilities, including those relating to aging, emotional disorders, physical and mental handicaps. Such an integrated model has relevance to work with families. They, too, are affected by the stresses of disability, and are susceptible to behavioural dysfunction. A number of examples are provided which addresses aspects of behavioural intervention and counselling. The behavioural strategies and attitudes of staff are examined, along with the degrees of structure required in effective rehabilitation counselling, including the processes of empowerment and consumer control.This paper arises from a presentation by the authors at IRTAC Vienna, 1987, and is based in part on Behavioural and Social Rehabilitation and Training by Brown, R.I. and Hughson, E.A., published by Wiley, Chichester, 1987. The paper examines the significance of British print media discourses surrounding the participation of Britain at both the 1948 and 1952 Olympics as well as former black British and Trinidad sprint champion, McDonald Bailey, who represented Britain at both Games. Based on textual analysis, it is argued that the print media discourses surrounding the Games and Bailey formed part of a much broader discourse concerning nationalism and national identity in post-war Britain which served to underline the role of sport as an invented tradition in shaping the construction of identities. Relatedly, the staging of the 1948 games in London had formed a critical part of the process of British reconstruction and renewal after the war not just in sport, but in society as a whole, which was intimately bound up with concerns over its pride, prestige and declining power in the world.  相似文献

Boudon has distinguished between the primary and secondary effects of socialization as a cause of social disparities in education. His explanation of secondary effects, which rests on an analysis of decision-making within opportunity cost constraints, has attracted support from realist sociologists. The empirical evidence, however, suggests that primary effects, largely the result of cognitive socialization in early childhood, may be a more important source of variance than Boudon recognizes. Some implications of this for a general theory of inequality/difference are examined with reference to the character of social explanation and in the context of the realist discussion on the structure-agency problem.  相似文献

This article describes work undertaken as part of a partnership programme initiated to encourage collaborative research between teachers and university tutors. In the Teaching Reading and Writing Links project (TRAWL) primary school teachers, working as research partners, explored ways of developing children as reflective writers. The research group wanted to know whether, through examining how texts are crafted by expert writers during literacy sessions, children might be encouraged to pay more attention to compositional rather than secretarial aspects of narrative writing during writing workshops. The overall writing achievement of 338 children was monitored over one school year and narrative writing from 60 case study children was evaluated at the beginning and end of the research period. In this article the impact on achievement is illustrated, some examples of writing are analysed and evidence of development in children's metacognition and confidence as writers is discussed.  相似文献
