First Graders' Interpersonal Understanding During Cooperative and Competitive Games

Differences in children's social interactions during cooperative and competitive games were investigated. Thirty-seven children from two first grade classes with cooperative classroom climates were videotaped while playing a cooperative and a competitive board game. Children's social interactions were coded using Selman's Levels of Enacted Interpersonal Understanding. Small but significant differences were found between game conditions, with more higher-level negotiation strategies and shared experiences occurring during the cooperative games. No differences were found in lower-level strategies. The benefits of using both competitive and cooperative games in early childhood classrooms are discussed.     

Meeting the challenge of educational disadvantage: a case-study

The author, a primary school headteacher and poet, offers some personal and practical advice for developing the use and joy in poetry within the classroom. He selects, as a form of case study, ideas and examples from his own school and from his work in other LEAs. The article also provides an extremely useful list of resources for teachers which will enable them to support their teaching of poetry and language skills.     

EPILOGUE: SPACED‐RETRIEVAL MEMORY TRAINING IN AN ADULT DAY‐CARE CENTER

A memory‐impaired client at an adult day‐care center was trained to remember the name of a staff member using the spaced‐retrieval technique. After two brief training sessions, the client demonstrated long‐term retention of the target name. Retention was maintained at follow‐up testing 6 months later. Details of the unique aspects of this cognitive intervention, along with implications of this project for cognitive aging research in general, are discussed. In particular, the social and emotional components of memory‐ and cognitive training tasks are emphasized.     

Relations of Power,Speed, Flexibility,and Certain Anthropometric Measures of Junior High School Girls

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the differences among 7th, 8th, and 9th grade girls in power, speed, and flexibility and to determine the relation between power and flexibility, speed and flexibility, and speed and certain anthropometric measures. The subjects were enrolled in ungraded physical education classes. Seventh grade girls were faster than 8th grade girls in the 50-yard dash. Ninth grade girls broad jumped farther than 7th and 8th grade girls. No significant relations were found in the other items studied.
