In the context of talk about changing their lives, incarcerated young men and their supervisors talk about faith as a force
for positive change. Given the historical and contemporary significance of religion as a locus of organizing and collective
struggle, I argue that faith represents a potential asset in efforts to assist incarcerated young offenders pursue education,
legal work, and sobriety or diminished substance (ab-)use. I draw on growing consensus among scholars of youth development
that religious affiliation, and spirituality more generally, are protective and can promote other positive developmental outcomes.
I also draw on discursive studies of substance abuse treatment and religious conversion to highlight the ways in which faith
talk by and for youth offers avenues for institutionally sanctioned agency and recognized genres of biographical reconstruction.
I conclude by suggesting that critically exploring matters of faith and belief in public institutions might usefully inform
curricular and programmatic interventions to assist young people avoid recidivism, school failure and substance abuse, and

Nanotechnology has been touted as the next ‘industrial revolution’ of our modern age. In order for successful research, development, and social discourses to take place in this field, education research is needed to inform the development of standards, course development, and workforce preparation. In addition, there is a growing need to educate citizens and students about risks, benefits, and social and ethical issues related to nanotechnology. This position paper describes the advancements that have been made in nanoscale science and nanotechnology, and the challenges that exist to educate students and the public about critical nanoscience concepts. This paper reviews the current research on nanotechnology education including curricula, educational programs, informal education, and teacher education. Furthermore, the unique risks, benefits and ethics of these unusual technological applications are described in relation to nanoeducation goals. Finally, we outline needed future research in the areas of nanoscience content, standards and curricula, nanoscience pedagogy, teacher education, and the risks, benefits, and social and ethical dimensions for education in this emerging field. 相似文献

The rank of professor or “full” professor represents the highest status possible for faculty members, and it is generally gained by attaining professional expertise and a national or international reputation. Beyond this, however, little is known about these individuals or the promotion process at this level. In this qualitative study of 10 faculty members at one research university in the United States, we sought to understand the experiences of individuals who had sought promotion to full professor. Through a socialization lens, we found that issues of time, a lack of clarity, and gender disparity were concerns for these faculty members. 相似文献

Children across the world face various challenges as they develop. This is especially true for asylum seekers and immigrant youth who arrive in a host country traumatized by their past and current experiences. Since educators are ideally poised to foster protective factors among children, we call on teachers to aid in the construction of childhood fortitude by becoming aware of the individual characteristics of resilience and then making efforts to build it as they instruct and interact with students. To this end, this article provides teachers with a list of indicators of childhood resilience and provides several recommendations for how educators can boost positive development at school.
