A selection of Views on Science–Technology–Society (VOSTS) items was made and administered to a group of 29 postgraduate trainee science teachers. Two sections of VOSTS were addressed: VOSTS 1 (Defining Science and Technology) and VOSTS 9 (Epistemology). Reliability was determined by a cross-tabulation procedure following a retest. All 27 items selected were generally found to be reliable, although when put to a severe treatment, 24 of 27 items were found to be reliable. A cluster analysis of the responses was also carried out: Two main clusters were obtained for VOSTS 1 and three for VOSTS 9. The findings are discussed, compared with those from the Canadian study, and reviewed in the context of professional development of science teachers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. ABSTRACT

Professional American football games are recorded in digital video with multiple cameras, often at high resolution and high frame rates. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a videogrammetry technique to calculate translational and rotational helmet velocity before, during and after a helmet impact. In total, 10 football impacts were staged in a National Football League (NFL) stadium by propelling helmeted 50th percentile male crash test dummies into each other or the ground at speeds and orientations representative of concussive impacts for NFL players. The tests were recorded by experienced sports film crews to obtain video coverage and quality typically available for NFL games. A videogrammetry procedure was used to track the position and rotation of the helmet throughout the relevant time interval of the head impact. Compared with rigidly mounted retroreflective marker three dimensional (3-D) motion tracking that was concurrently collected in the experiments, videogrammetry accurately calculated changes in translational and rotational velocity of the helmet using high frame rate (two cameras at 240 Hz) video (7% and 15% error, respectively). Low frame rate (2 cameras at 60 Hz) video was adequate for calculating pre-impact translational velocity but not for calculating the translational or rotational velocity change of the helmet during impact.  相似文献

Abstract

Research has shown that talented athletes outscore their mainstream peers on the basis of self-regulation. Although valuable, this does not tell us more about the distinction between good athletes and the best, which is a prerequisite in talent development. Therefore, we examined the self-regulatory skills of 222 male and female talented athletes aged 12–16 years as a function of competitive sport level (junior international or junior national athletes) and type of sport (individual or team sports). Multivariate analyses of covariance in combination with a discriminant function analysis revealed that “reflection” distinguishes between athletes at the highest levels of excellence. Furthermore, athletes playing individual sports had higher scores on “planning” and “effort” than team sport athletes, highlighting the importance of differences between types of sport. In conclusion, we emphasize the importance of reflection as a self-regulatory skill. Reflection facilitates the development of sport-specific characteristics, which may vary by type of sport. This means that an advanced sense of reflection may help talented athletes to acquire desirable characteristics during their “talent” years to ultimately reach adult elite levels of competition.  相似文献

In this paper I investigate ‘the confessional’ as an aspect of Wittgenstein's style both as a mode of philosophising and as a mode of ‘writing the self’, tied explicitly to pedagogical practices. There are strong links between Wittgenstein's confessional mode of philosophising and his life—for him philosophy is a way of life —and interesting theoretical connections between confessional practices and pedagogy, usefully explored in the writings of the French philosopher, Michel Foucault. The Investigations provides a basis and springboard for understanding the notion of ‘writing the self’ as a pedagogical practice which encourages a confessional mode compelling us to tell the truth about ourselves and, thus, creating the conditions for ethico‐poetical self‐constitution.  相似文献

Students training to become teachers of science to children aged between 7 to 11 years used principles of reflective practice linked to participatory approaches in their curriculum planning and evaluation. A central part of the work was to enable them to introduce aspects of education for sustainability to their pupils. Students first undertook a process of clarifying their ideas and concerns about education for sustainability. They went on to develop aims that should help them to achieve a series of objectives that they identified. Teaching schemes were created and trialled in the classroom. A semi‐quantitative evaluation instrument was devised based on the objectives that had been set, allowing judgements to be made about the effectiveness of the teaching approaches used.  相似文献

In July 2002, the National College for School Leadership (NCSL) held a 'Leading Edge' seminar focused on the contribution that leaders in special schools can make to the development of Inclusive policies and practices. The day gave colleagues working in specialist contexts an opportunity to share examples and experiences of current initiatives and to speculate about future trends and developments in inclusive education. In this article, Robin Attfield and Chris Williams, Assistant Directors in Programmes and Research respectively at the NCSL, explore the context in which the seminar took place and some of the themes and issues that emerged from discussion on the day. At the end of their paper, they summarise the key messages that the special school leaders who attended the seminar wished to communicate to a wider audience and articulate a further role for leaders in special schools in the development of inclusion.  相似文献

Predicting whether higher education systems will lead to wider and more equitable participation calls for multiple perspectives going outside the European and Anglophone worlds, and beyond looking education also to other sub‐systems of society and government. This reminds us to consider need as well as supply and demand, the importance of place and regions, and the new salience of ‘engagement’, as well as the vital importance of different cultural contexts for what they determine and allow for universalising higher education systems. More or less deep‐reaching curriculum changes may occur. Seven different possible models for the future of HE are proposed, concluding with a prognosis as to what scenario is likely to prevail.  相似文献
