Weight factor selection in double exponential smoothing enrollment forecasts

The merits of double exponential smoothing are discussed relative to other types of pattern-based enrollment forecasting methods. The basic assumptions and formulas for its use are outlined. The difficulties associated with selecting an appropriate weight factor are discussed, and the potential effect on prediction results is illustrated. Two methods for objectively selecting the best weight factor are described and analyzed, and evidence is presented suggesting that they may be used effectively in the enrollment-forecasting process.Presented at the Twentieth Annual Forum of the Association for Institutional Research, Atlanta, April 1980.     

Place,community and information behavior: Spatially oriented information seeking zones and information source preferences

Even in a digitally advanced society, much of our daily lives is based in place, but information behavior research has largely ignored place as theoretically relevant to information behavior. This study explores the implications of a place-based approach to studying information practices, and examines factors that influence information seeking and sharing in place-based communities among parents of individuals with disabilities. Based on qualitative data gathered from 35 parents of individuals with disabilities, it proposes a spatial model of information source preferences based on the theory of information horizons, and discusses implications of the model for future research related to information seeking and places. It also presents substantive place-related findings about local information needs, including discussion of the local parent network as an information seeking system.     

A newer class o f precise oscillator models

A method has been presented in recent papers for deriving precisely stabilized waveform generators by relating them to second order conservative oscillators. The present paper demonstrates a method for modifying the previous models and in doing so a novel class of applicable oscillator models is established.Conditions that enable the models to sustain oscillations in steady state are described. A precise method for dynamically stabilizing the oscillators waveforms is developed, and practical uses are suggested.     

Our Constructed Reality: Some Contributions of an Alternative Perspective to Physical Education Pedagogy

This paper describes a loose coalition of ideas that form an alternative perspective to the dominant research and development work currently being conducted in physical education pedagogy. It is argued that the profession will be best served if both perspectives better understand and share their assumptions, and especially if they recognize the subjective nature of their work.
