Cultural clash and educational diversity: Immigrant teachers' efforts to rescue the education of immigrant children in Israel

Thousands of immigrants who arrived from the former USSR during the past decade have drastically changed the Israeli educational system. However, constituting about 12% of the potential labour force of educators, immigrant teachers represent less than 5% of the actual teaching staff; 69% of immigrant students in the 17-year-old age cohort do not possess a matriculation certificate. This article presents the results of research that studied probably the most prominent effort to rescue the education of immigrant children, namely the Mofet system, which was founded by a group of immigrant teachers in 1991. Today's Mofet runs more than 20 supplementary evening schools around the country and five day-schools. The development of the Mofet group for the advancement of education is one of the most significant examples of the consolidation trends among the Russian-speaking intelligentsia in Israel. However, the authors argue that though Mofet's success is directly linked to the general education system's failure to meet immigrants' needs, it does not express Russian immigrants' desire for socio-cultural segregation.

Laboratory Assessment of Choice between Exercise or Sedentary Behaviors

The purpose of this study was to compare cardiovascular fitness between obese and nonobese children. Based on body mass index, 118 were classified as obese (boys [OB] = 62, girls [OG] = 56), while 421 were nonobese (boys [NOB] = 196, girls [NOG] = 225). Cardiovascular fitness was determined by a 1-mile [1.6 km] run/walk (MRW) and estimated peak oxygen uptake (VO₂peak) and analyzed using two-way analyses of variance (Gender x Obese/Nonobese). MRW times were significantly faster (p < .05) for the NOB (10 min 34 s) compared to the OB (13 min 8 s) and the NOG (13 min 15 s.) compared to the OG (14 min 44 s.). Predicted VO₂peak values (mL·kg^-1·min^-1) were significantly higher (p < .05) for the NOB (48.29) compared to the OB (41.56) and the NOG (45.99) compared to the OG (42.13). MRW was compared between obese and nonobese participants on the President's Challenge (2005), the National Children and Youth Fitness Study, and FITNESSGRAM® HFZ standards. The nonobese boys and girls scored higher on all three, exhibiting better cardiovascular fitness as compared to obese counterparts.

我国博士生教育体制改革探讨

调查发现,近十年我国的博士研究生招生数量急剧增加,每年毕业获得博士学位的人数也相应增加,不仅推动了我国经济、科技等领域的快速发展,同时也对传统的教育体制和教育方式提出了挑战。文章主要探讨了博士生教育的现状、存在的问题,并对比美国的博士生教育体制,给出了相应的解决办法和政策建议。     

处方教学模式在高校体育教学中的实验研究

运用《体质健康评价与运动处方系统》 ,结合高校体育教学的特点 ,在河北省内 8所高等院校的部分教学班中进行了“处方教学模式”的实验研究。实验结果表明 ,处方教学模式在高校体育教学中的实施能充分体现出教学的多样化及实际、实效、实用的特点 ,有利于学生终身体育观念的形成 ;充分体现“学生主体性”和“区别对待”的教学原则 ;有利于学校体育课内外一体化局面的形成。
