Today more than ever, preparation for diversity is essential for all teachers. Hence, teacher preparation programs are charged with preparing culturally competent teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to work with children and families from cultures different from their own. This article investigates an innovative approach, the Cultural Self-Analysis (CSA) Project, to accomplish this task with 26 prospective early childhood teachers. CSA Project steps are presented. Data collected on multiple levels were analyzed using constant comparative methodologies. Findings from this initial investigation suggest the CSA Project holds promise as an approach to prepare culturally responsive teachers in three major ways. Participants reported increased confidence and comfort, preparedness to facilitate home connections with culturally diverse persons, and enlightenment of teacher roles/responsibilities beyond academic instruction. 相似文献

In September 1990, the University of Washington (UW) received a Phase I IAIMS Planning Grant from the National Library of Medicine and embarked upon a planning process involving the entire health sciences center. As a result of our relatively late entry into IAIMS planning, we have been able to learn from the experiences of other health sciences centers and to leverage our existing institutional efforts. Consequently, our progress has been rapid, and in a little over a year, we drafted a long-range plan and embarked on several related research and development projects. The hallmarks of our planning process include careful study of both the UW institutional environment and the experiences of other IAIMS institutions throughout the United States; broad, interdisciplinary participation of faculty, librarians, and administrators; an intensive educational process; a focus on people rather than technology; and, above all, leveraging of existing institutional and research projects that support our vision for the future. 相似文献

There is much in the literature reporting details of children's experience of their preschool educational setting as perceived by adults; however, few reports exist with regard to children's own perceptions of their experience. This article discusses some of the problems associated with interviewing young children and suggests an interviewing technique involving the use of role play. Children in three nursery classes were interviewed in order to ascertain their perceptions of their nursery experience. Phenomenography has provided a useful framework for the interpretation of findings. This approach is based upon the theory that there are a limited number of qualitatively different ways in which people perceive or understand various aspects of, or phenomena in, the world (Marton, 1988). The methodology described here provides an approach for evaluating safe human and organizational performance in nuclear power generating utilities and other high–risk, safety–oriented industries. Using existing indicators of desired organizational performance, internal and external evaluators can measure performance outcomes, as well as the effects of training on performance readiness. The performance outcomes “state of readiness” collectively impact on the safety of organizational operations. This proposed methodology is cost–efficient because it uses existing human and organizational resources; it is unobtrusive on the organization's time and manpower; it can be employed readily by external evaluators; and it can simultaneously be used to analyze an organization's effects on society's safety. 相似文献

This paper provides a critical appraisal of approaches to reflexivity in sociology. It uses data from social network research to argue that Archer’s approach to reflexivity provides a valuable lens with which to understand how people navigate their education and career pathways. The paper is also critical of Archer’s methodology and typology of reflexivity as ‘types’; it is argued that social network research suggests people reveal different approaches to reflexivity in different situations. Flavonoids extracted from the leaves of Indian holy basil, Ocimum sanctum showed promising results as radioprotector in rodents.
Hence it was thought pertinent to analyze the antioxidants of erythrocytes in oral cancer patients who were concurrently treated
with radiation and ocimum flavonoids. Oral cancer patients consisted of 2 groups. Group A (n=17) received radiation alone
while Group B(n=17) received radiation and ocimum flavonoids(OF). Samples of heparinised blood were collected prior to treatment,
15 and 30 days respectively after treatment. Blood from normal healthy volunteers were taken as controls (n=25). Erythrocytes
were analyzed for the antioxidants viz. glutathione, glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide
dismutase by the standard methods. Results of analysis indicated that erythrocytes from cancer patients (Group A and B) had
significantly high glutathione levels before as well as after treatment compared to controls. It was observed that Group B
which received OF showed a significant reduction in glutathione levels in comparison with Group A. All the other parameters
showed no statistical significant changes. Results of the study suggest that erythrocytes from cancer patients responded to
oxidative stress by elevating glutathione levels, while a decrease in glutathione levels observed in Group B, could be due
to the free radical scavenging effect of OF, sparing the glutathione. However OF did not seem to exert its effect on other
