Improving the International Student Experience in Australia Through Embedded Peer Mentoring

As Australia endeavors to sustain growth of its international education industry, there have been major concerns regarding the experience of international students. This review examines the international student experience in Australia, particularly issues surrounding study–work–life balance (SWLB), acculturation, health, and well-being. The current university initiatives of pastoral care services and peer mentoring are evaluated and noted to be underutilized by students. Consequently, an internationalized, university-wide peer-mentor-embedded classroom initiative is proposed. While attempting to overcome the main methodological issues identified, future research is invited to test whether such an initiative is effective in producing positive acculturation, SWLB, health and well-being outcomes for both international and local students.     

Proportional reasoning and the linguistic abilities required for hypothetico-deductive reasoning

The hypothesis is advanced that a necessary, though not sufficient, condition for the acquisition of proportional reasoning during adolescence is the prior internalization of key linguistic elements of argumentation, essentially those used in hypothetico-deductive reasoning. This hypothesized internalization, which does not occur in all individuals, results in some who have acquired the ability to reflect upon the correctness of self-generated answers in a hypothetico-deductive manner, and others who have not. As an initial test of the hypothesis, 46 subjects (Ss) (mean age = 21.03 years) were classified into additive, transitional, or proportional reasoning categories based upon responses to a proportions task. Group differences were found in which proportional Ss performed better than transitional Ss who in turn performed better than additive Ss on a number of items testing Ss' abilities to identify, generate, and use the linguistic elements of argumentation. Further it was found that some Ss who were successful on the linguistic items failed the proportions task, but no Ss who were successful on the proportions task failed the linguistic items. This result supports the hypothesis that the internalization of linguistic elements of argumentation is a prerequisite for proportional reasoning and by inference other advanced reasoning schemata as well. Implications for science instruction are drawn.     

Reliability and Validity of Self Report of Aerobic Activity: Family Health Project

Abstract

Two studies are presented which deal with the reliability and validity of self-reports of aerobic activity. The first study compared two forms of self-report data obtained as part of a study of intervention strategy. The two forms were daily self-report and weekly retrospective report. Analyses covering the overlapping time period revealed differences in mean minutes engaged in activity, but modest and statistically significant correlations between the two forms among adults participating in the intervention group. No meaningful results were obtained among adults in the control group, nor among children in either group. The need for the development and testing of self-report forms among children was noted, and was the subject of the second study.

In Study II, six different forms on which third to sixth grade children recorded their aerobic activity were compared against two days of continuous observations of their behavior. The six forms varied along two dimensions. The first dimension varied the time period of reporting: half the forms required reporting by segments of the day; the other half allowed for reporting of the day as a whole. The second dimension varied response format: one third of the forms asked for a dichotomous (yes; no) report; one third asked for a trichotomous (no; yes, but less than 20 min; yes, for 20 min or more) report; and one third asked for reporting of precise numbers of minutes. The segmented day forms resulted in significantly higher agreement with the observers' report of activity. This finding is interpreted to be congruent with recent research on the importance of context in the recall of behavior. No effect from parental assistance in child's form completion was detected.     

‘Beasts of Burden’: Productive Tensions between Haraway and Radical Animal Rights Activism

Coming from a critical animal studies perspective, this essay develops an urgent challenge to what Zipporah Weisberg describes as the ‘largely depoliticized approach within animal studies’ (2009: 5), with a focus on the work of Donna Haraway. Drawing on grassroots activist literature and practice, the essay analyses some productive tensions between animal rights perspectives and the work of Haraway, which centre on their different strategies for challenging the symbolic and material role of animals within biocapitalism. This approach reinstates the value of activist praxis to animal studies, arguing that it has the capacity to unsettle the positioning of animals as biocapital more successfully than Haraway's own ethical project. Due to being at the heart of debates between Haraway and theorists from within critical animal studies, vegan activism illustrates an animal rights practice that can work to undermine the structures that render animals ‘legitimately’ exploitable: despite Haraway's arguments to the contrary. The work of activists involved in the Hori-zone, a temporary eco-village established as a protest camp near the 2005 G8 summit at Gleneagles, is used to explore how veganism can be used as a micro-sociological tactic to challenge the exploitation that pervades everyday life.     

The wigner distribution in speech processing applications

Recently the Wigner distribution has been shown to be a potentially useful tool for analysing the time varying frequency domain phenomenon. In this paper, some of the salient features of the Wigner distribution are presented; properties of this important discrete distribution are derived, and an efficient digital implementation is presented. Effective Wigner throughput rates, in excess of those obtainable with an equivalent length FFT, are shown to be feasible. In particular, the Wigner distribution is studied in the context of enhancing speech analysis and recognition systems. It is suggested that this class of distribution is consistent with the mechanics of human speech and, using experimentation, produces a very robust spectral signature. This enriched data space can be used to uncover some frequency domain attributes of human speech which may be lost using a discrete Fourier transform.     

Real-time measurement of thrombin generation using continuous droplet microfluidics

Thrombin, which has the leading role in the blood coagulation cascade, is an important biomarker in hemostasis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) development. In this study, a measurement system capable of continuously monitoring individual thrombin generation using droplet microfluidic technology is manipulated. The thrombin generation assay based on fluogenic substrate is performed within the droplets and the thrombin generation curve of plasma sample activated by tissue factor is measured in real-time to reflect the sample conditions dynamically. The injection of the inhibitor of thrombin generation is developed to assay the inhibited curve which relates to thrombin self-inhibition in biological systems. This microfluidic system is integrated with the microdialysis probe, which is useful to connect to the living animals for future in vivo real time thrombin measurements for rapid CVD diagnosis.
