S-35-glutathione preparation from yeast and tracer studies in cancerous and non-cancerous rats

S³⁵-labeled glutathione has been synthesized biologically by yeast grown in a medium containing S³⁵ in the form of sulfate.S³⁵ from the labeled glutathione administered to normal rats or to rats with Walker carcinoma No. 256 was found in both the protein and the glutathione of the tissues. The concentration of S³⁵ in the sulfur of the glutathione isolated was several times greater than in the protein sulfur of the same tissue.The degree of uptake of S³⁵ was very nearly equal in like tissues of the normal and of the tumor-bearing rats. The degree of uptake in tumor was about the same as in liver but considerably less than in intestinal mucosa.     

Effects of concept and vee mappings under three learning modes on students' cognitive achievement in ecology and genetics

This study verified the efficacy of concept and vee mapping heuristics under cooperative (CP), cooperative–competitive (CP-CM) and individualistic whole (IW) class learning conditions in improving students' achievement in ecology and genetics. A total of 808 tenth-grade students were involved in the study. The results showed that the experimental groups taught with concept and vee mappings under the three learning modes achieved significantly better than the control groups. Students in the CP-CM condition in all groups achieved significantly better than their counterparts in the other two groups, whereas the CP-CM experimental group students achieved significantly best. A significant interaction between treatment and ability suggested that an element of competition, when combined with small group cooperation, favored students of lower ability.     

Measuring child maltreatment risk in communities: a life table approach

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to: (1) illustrate the application of life table methodology to child abuse and neglect report data and (2) demonstrate the use of indicators derived from the life tables for monitoring the risk of child maltreatment within a community. METHOD: Computerized records of child maltreatment reports from a large, urban county in Ohio are cumulated for 11 years and linked for each child. Life table methods are used to estimate the probability that children from birth to age 10 will be reported victims of maltreatment by age, race, and urban or suburban residence. RESULTS: Using life tables, the estimates in the county of this study are that 33.4% of African American children and 11.8% of White children will appear in substantiated or indicated child abuse or neglect report(s) by their 10th birthday. The age-specific probability of a maltreatment report is highest in the first year of life for both groups. The probability of a child being reported for a substantiated or indicated incident of maltreatment before his or her 10th birthday is more than three times higher for city dwellers than for suburbanites in the urban county studied here. CONCLUSIONS: Life table methodology is useful for creating child well-being indicators for communities. Such indicators reveal that a larger portion of the child population is affected by maltreatment reports than would be concluded from examining cross-sectional rates and can be used to identify racial or geographic disparities.     

Study on Multimedia CAI Authoring Systems

Abstract

Starting with a look back at most of our school days, this article considers the possible demise of the textbook as new technologies are introduced, but is by no means sure that this will come about. Certain conditions are needed if new technologies are to take their place alongside textbooks in the eyes of teachers.

Telephone Interviewing Practices within Academic Libraries

This study explores the use of telephone interviews within academic libraries by surveying the 112 academic institutional members of the Association of Research Libraries to identify how telephone interviews are utilized. By comparing the literature to the research results, the authors conclude with best practices for telephone interviews.
