With increasing frequency, authors in academic and non-academic fields are releasing their books for free digital distribution.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that exposure to both authors and books increases when books are available as free downloads,
and that print sales are not negatively affected. For this study we interviewed ten authors to determine their perceptions
of the effect free digital distribution has on the impact and sales of their work. In addition, we examined the sales data
of two books over a two year period of time, in which one book was freely available for the second year. All of the individuals
we surveyed felt free digital downloads increased the distribution and impact of their book. None of the authors felt that
print sales were negatively affected. Data from our book sale comparison suggest that in the case we studied, free digital
distribution did not negatively affect sales. 相似文献

The authors collected narrative data from 11 African American female college students at a predominantly White institution using the Career Construction Interview (Savickas & Hartung, 2012 ), the Future Career Autobiography (Rehfuss, 2009 ), and a qualitative career experiences questionnaire. Using the constant comparison method (Strauss & Corbin, 1990 ), the authors uncovered 4 overarching themes based on the unique experiences of participants. This article presents and discusses some new research on the National Curriculum Key Stage Two reading tests for years 1998, 1999 and 2000. The research task was to use the original categories designed and declared by the QCA in 1998 to analyse the reading tests in the two subsequent years in order to examine the reliability of the tests. The research shows that in 1999, and again in 2000 the reading tests were progressively easier for the children to answer. This was because the number of questions requiring higher‐order reading skills, particularly those of inference and deduction, has decreased each year, while the number of questions requiring the lower‐order skill of literal information retrieval has increased. This article discusses the attitudes of people concerned with the under fives, to the subject of gender and play experiences. Playgroup workers, parents and social work staff were questioned on their beliefs about children's choices in play. Amongst the playgroup workers and social work staff there appeared to be a belief that children should be free to choose their play activities and that these choices were often influenced by gender, as biological factors make boys and girls want to play in different ways. Parents, they believed, would object to any coercion or positive discrimination in favour of girls to allow them equal access to play material. Parents, on the other hand, were anxious for playgroups to remove gender stereotyping and assumed that positive action was being taken. The ontogeny of fetal autonomic, motoric, state, and interactive functioning was investigated longitudinally in a sample of 31 healthy fetuses from 20 weeks through term. Fetal heart rate and movement data were collected during 50 min of Doppler-based fetal monitoring at 6 gestational ages. Measures of fetal heart rate and variability, activity level and vigor, behavioral state, and reactivity were derived from these digitized data. Weighted least squares analyses were conducted to model the developmental patterns and to examine the role of maternal and fetal covariates. With advancing gestation, fetuses displayed slower heart rate, increased heart rate variability, reduced but more vigorous motor behavior, coalescence of heart rate and movement patterns into distinct behavioral states, and increasing cardiac responsivity to stimulation. Male fetuses were more active than female fetuses, and greater maternal stress appraisal was associated with reduced fetal heart rate variability. An apparent period of neurobehavioral transition exists between 28 and 32 weeks. Fetal research methods are evaluated. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to explore the profiles of classroom behaviour relating to attention and executive functions in children with very poor working memory, and to test the hypothesis that inattentive behaviour and working memory problems co-occur. Teachers rated problem behaviours of 52 children with low working memory scores aged 5/6 and 9/10 years on teacher rating measures of attention and executive function behaviours. The majority of children with low working memory scores obtained atypically high ratings of cognitive problems/ inattentive symptoms, and were judged to have short attention spans, high levels of distractibility, problems in monitoring the quality of their work, and difficulties in generating new solutions to problems. These results extend previous findings that working memory problems and inattentive behaviour co-occur to a non-clinical sample. It is suggested that reduced working memory capacity may play a causal role in the problem behaviours of these children. 相似文献

Globally, science curricula have been described as outdated, and students perceive school science as lacking in relevance.
Declines in senior secondary and tertiary student participation in science indicate an urgent need for change if we are to
sustain future scientific research and development, and perhaps more importantly, to equip students with the knowledge and
skills to make informed decisions related to scientific research. This paper argues that a good starting point would be the
inclusion of more contemporary areas of science in middle school curricula. One such area with continually emerging developments
is biotechnology. This paper further argues the need for research into the impact of biotechnology education that would allow
students to go beyond learning about biotechnological processes and products to explore their benefits and risks through an
integrated approach, where biotechnology education were extended to include subject areas beyond science, such as social sciences,
health education, and English. Such an approach is important, in light of research that suggests that the general public has
a limited understanding of biotechnology and that public dissemination of information is insufficient to allow individuals
to make informed decisions about or to develop attitudes towards, the varied applications of biotechnology. If we are to educate
students to be tomorrow’s informed decision-makers, we must start by addressing their understanding of and attitudes towards
emerging sciences. Further research is needed to broaden our understanding of how to achieve these goals. 相似文献
