Music video as persuasive form: The case of the pseudo‐reflexive strategy

This essay examines music video as a media form designed to persuade television viewers to purchase musical recordings. By associating performers and their songs with strategically selected visual images, video makers hope to evoke impressions which might lead viewers to desire the recordings produced by the performers featured in video clips. One specific production strategy, “pseudo‐reflexivity,” involves employing imagery that demystifies some, but not all, of the aspects of the video making process in order to both draw audience attention away from the promotional motives underlying video production and enhance the anti‐commercial stance typically adopted by hard rock musicians.     

Seeking conceptual clarity in the action modalities

This article begins with the presumption that action learning has not made as deep an impact in promoting participatory social change as its supporters may have hoped for, but nor has its cousin action modalities, such as action research and action science. These action strategies have evolved separately along distinct traditions and, rather than focus on their commonalities, their proponents have tended to cite their differences from one another. As a result, they have seldom stood together to advocate for their shared epistemology based on practice as the fundamental unit of analysis. Accordingly, after briefly summarizing the history and differences among these action modalities, this article will focus on their potential confederation. It cites ten unifying elements that may construct an agenda characterized by the value of learners collectively reflecting on planned engagements that can not only expand but can create knowledge while at the same time serving to improve practice.     

Utilizing Summative Evaluation Through External Peer Review of Teaching

This article examines the dichotomy between summative and formative evaluation of teaching and suggests a new model for reviewing teaching that utilizes colleagues from other campuses (external review) as a means of summative evaluation. Traditionally student evaluations and on-campus peer-based review of teaching (internal review) discourage innovations in teaching assessments because they are used for summative purposes. Based on research conducted as a part of the AAHE Peer Review of Teaching National Project, this article argues that summative evaluation of teaching should be based on external review leaving internal review primarily for formative purposes.Jere W. Human information seeking: Online searching of bibliographic citation networks

The strategies, heuristics, and tradeoff?s involved in online searching of bibliographic citation networks are discussed. Results from the field of citation analysis are used to describe the mathematical structure of citation networks. An experimental environment called DBASE (Data Base Access and Search Environment) is discussed and its use in two studies of human information seeking behavior considered. Variables examined in these studies included the nature of the search question and the interconnectivity of the data base.     

Incivility and Dysfunction in the Library Workplace: Perceptions and Feedback from the Field

Issues associated with lack of civility, less than ideal functionality, and employees that may not self-reflect as much they should are all challenges in the modern workplace and libraries are no exception. The purpose of this study was to determine which issues associated with a lack of civility such as mobbing, bullying, workplace dysfunction, and lack of abilities regarding self-reflection were found in the library workplace and to what extent. The data represents the feedback of 4,168 library employees through a self-reporting survey instrument designed by the authors with the help of the American Library Association. Data is both quantitative and qualitative and seeks to examine the issues addressed across all types of libraries. While useful for all library employees, this study and report are especially relevant to the modern library administrator.
