Recent policy in England has suggested that educational outcomes will be raised if schools specialise in particular subjects. In contrast, calls for the reform of 16–19 education have suggested that these outcomes will be improved if students become less specialised in their studies. At present, there is a limited evidence base from which to judge these arguments. In particular, we do not know the extent to which students’ achievements in 16–19 education are higher when they choose subjects which play to their perceived strengths. We also do not know whether students are more likely to choose to study subjects taught by more effective departments. That is, outcomes may be affected by the relative strengths of students or departments in circumstances where there is freedom to choose. In this paper we provide evidence of the existence and strength of these relationships. This evidence suggests that reducing the scope within schools for specialisation or competition will reduce average student attainment and these effects ought to be taken into account when evaluating alternative curriculum policies. 相似文献

This case study paper presents four mini-case studies which explore IT service management issues within IT departments. It suggests that there is a shift in focus in IT away from the technical artefacts towards customer directed services. The case studies concern a hospital, a provider of marine charts, a logistics company and the batch operations of a bank. A range of issues are discussed including the provision of customer support, the acquisition of software and services, relationships with suppliers and the development of service strategy. Fungi are non-chlorophyllus microorganisms, which constitutes the main source of outdoor and indoor allergens. The antigens present in the spores and fragments of hyphae induce allergic responses in sensitized patients. The frequently recognized fungi associated with asthma include Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. With the advent of molecular biology techniques a number of fungal genes encoding relevant allergens have been cloned and the expressed allergens purified and characterized. In this review, we have presented the recent developments, where recombinant allergens have been used in the precise diagnosis of fungal allergy. Linguistic analysis of short published reports leads to the presentation of an aigorithm that depicts the problem-solving process in terms of a series of evaluative questions. The work shows how reports enable us to define in detail the various stages of problem solving, and it shows that an understanding of these various stages enables us to recognise information structures in written texts; the writing of brief reports of high-priority information on which the whole thinking process is based is thus seen as a vital part of the problem-solving process. One report is analysed in detail to demonstrate the close relationship between information structures in the text and the real-life thought'action process it describes. There is discussion of how paragraphs, sentences and signals within the sentences enable the writer to communicate the information in a conceptual array that represents the actual thought/action process it describes. AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate spatiotemporal and kinematic changes between the initial acceleration, transition and maximum velocity phases of a sprint. Sagittal plane kinematics from five experienced sprinters performing 50-m maximal sprints were collected using six HD-video cameras. Following manual digitising, spatiotemporal and kinematic variables at touchdown and toe-off were calculated. The start and end of the transition phase were identified using the step-to-step changes in centre of mass height and segment angles. Mean step-to-step changes of spatiotemporal and kinematic variables during each phase were calculated. Firstly, the study showed that if sufficient trials are available, step-to-step changes in shank and trunk angles might provide an appropriate measure to detect sprint phases in applied settings. However, given that changes in centre of mass height represent a more holistic measure, this was used to sub-divide the sprints into separate phases. Secondly, during the initial acceleration phase large step-to-step changes in touchdown kinematics were observed compared to the transition phase. At toe-off, step-to-step kinematic changes were consistent across the initial acceleration and transition phases before plateauing during the maximal velocity phase.
