Museums present different contexts for learning, particularly when compared with places such as schooos, universities and
libraries. They have been described as free-choice learning environments visited by a broad range of people. Museums have
the opportunity to shape identities—through access to objects, knowledge and information visitors see themselves and their
culture reflected in ways that encourage new connections, meaning making and learning. However, across the world museums are
finding themselves competing with other leisure and learning experiences in an increasingly global world. The long history
of audience research in the cultural sector demonstrates the interest museums have had in their visitors over time. This paper
outlines the development of audience research in museums, the context within which it operates, and describes the processes
of audience research through a series of case studies drawn from the work of the Australian Museum Audience Research Centre.
It is argued that the shift in museums from mission-led program development to balancing content and audience needs through
a transaction approach requires a broader research-focused agenda. While traditional ways of conducting evaluations are necessary
and useful, to remain viable audience research needs to be more strategic, working across the sector in new ways and utilising
new methods. How programs impact on users and facilitate learning about a wide range of key issues that museums are concerned
with is a leadership role that audience research can take across both the cultural sector and other free-choice learning contexts.
To achieve this, a communities of practice approach is suggested as a potential framework for audience research in the contemporary

This article presents a systematic approach to defining, applying, evaluating, refining, and revising metrics for students’ soft skills—their abilities like critical thinking, problem solving, leadership and responsibility, communication, and collaboration. The importance of these skills in educational and work settings is growing rapidly. While such skills are easy to notice, they are hard to measure. Metrics do exist, but vary from one case to another, and are often rather implicit and vague. Contrary to that, this article proposes the use of precisely specified, measurable, low-inference indicators (metrics) to assess soft skills. The article also introduces an open set of principles that can be used to guide the specification of concrete, evidence-based metrics for different soft skills. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach. These case studies are part of a larger research effort that has developed an open set of metrics for different soft skills; some of them are discussed in the article extensively. Generalizing the metrics used in specific educational contexts is also discussed. 相似文献

Previous nationally-representative research in Scotland found a j-shaped relationship between age and leisure sedentary time (ST): a decrease from young to middle-age, before rising steeply in older-age. This study investigated the effects of age and sex on weekday (including work) ST for all adults and stratified by work-status, and on weekend day ST. Differences in the relative contributions of component behaviours were also investigated. Responses from 14,367 adult (≥16 years) 2012–14 Scottish Health Survey participants were analysed using linear regressions. We found no j-shaped relationship between age and weekday ST. Instead, only 16–24 year olds reported lower levels than those over 75 years (6.6 (95% CI: 6.3–6.9) compared to 7.4 (95% CI: 7.2–7.6) hours/day; p < 0001). The j-shape was only evident in the stratified analysis amongst women not in work, and for weekend day ST for all groups. For those in work, work ST accounted for 45% of weekday ST. Television/screen ST made up over half of leisure ST on weekdays and weekend days, regardless of sex, age, or work-status. These results challenge our understanding of how ST varies by age. Interventions to reduce ST should consider differences in the relative contributions of ST behaviours by age and work-status. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the Family Stress Checklist helps prenatal care providers identify adolescents who are at risk for mistreating their children. METHODS: We studied 262 participants in a comprehensive, adolescent-oriented maternity program. During the prenatal period, the Family Stress Checklist was used to quantify abuse potential, with scores >25 defining high risk. Information about the social context of the pregnancy and the pattern of health care utilization was obtained with a self-administered questionnaire, and by reviewing the medical records. Major disruption of primary care giving by the adolescent mother was classified hierarchically as abuse, neglect, and abandonment. RESULTS: Family Stress Checklist scores ranged from 0 to 65 (mean + SD = 20.1 + 1.4); 113 (43%) of the 262 teenagers were classified as high risk. High and low risk adolescent mothers made an equivalent number of health maintenance and Emergency Department visits, but the high risk group initiated significantly more acute care visits (6.0 + 4.1 compared to 3.9 + 3.3; p < .0001). After controlling for pre-existing sociodemographic differences, high risk 1-year-olds were 8.41 (95% CI: 1.77-40.01) times and high risk 2-year-olds 5.19 (95% CI: 1.99-13.60) times more likely to have been mistreated than their low risk counterparts. CONCLUSIONS: Prenatal care providers can use the Family Stress Checklist to systematically identify a subgroup of adolescent mother whose excessive use of the acute medical care services and propensity for mistreating their children suggests the need for additional support services. 相似文献
