Evangelical Christian parents’ attitudes towards abstinence-based sex education: ‘I want my kids to have great sex!’

While an overwhelming majority of people in the USA support some form of school-based sexual education, the specific content and context for that instruction varies widely, making it difficult to assess support for particular types of programmes. This is particularly the case for evangelical Christians, about whom there is a lack of scholarly consensus concerning support for sexual education. This paper addresses this gap, and examines the assumption that evangelical Christians uniformly support abstinence-only sexual education, using qualitative analysis among a group of evangelical Christians in a medium-sized Texas city. Respondents were asked during interviews to identify the types of sex education-related content they support, and where and how they believe these messages should be taught. Respondents were also asked to identify their rationales for supporting (or opposing) certain elements of sexual education. Interviews revealed a group of evangelical Christian parents who verbalised their explicit opposition to abstinence-based sex education in schools, lamenting the sex-negative messages they believe to be associated with it. It additionally became apparent that these parents believe that their opposition to abstinence-based sexual education aligns with a silent majority of evangelical Christians.     

A small-scale concept-based laboratory component: the best of both worlds

In this article, we describe an exploratory study of a small-scale, concept-driven, voluntary laboratory component of Introductory Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We wished to investigate whether students' attitudes toward biology and their understanding of basic biological principles would improve through concept-based learning in a laboratory environment. With these goals in mind, and using our Biology Concept Framework as a guide, we designed laboratory exercises to connect topics from the lecture portion of the course and highlight key concepts. We also strove to make abstract concepts tangible, encourage learning in nonlecture format, expose the students to scientific method in action, and convey the excitement of performing experiments. Our initial small-scale assessments indicate participation in the laboratory component, which featured both hands-on and minds-on components, improved student learning and retention of basic biological concepts. Further investigation will focus on improving the balance between the minds-on concept-based learning and the hands-on experimental component of the laboratory.

From the podium to the boardroom: Encouraging gender parity in scholarly publishing

• Despite their nearly three-fifths industry majority, women trail men in key leadership positions, occupying about one-third of CEO positions, and one-fifth of Board chairs.
• Speaking at industry conferences is key to professional development and to consideration for senior leadership positions.
• An analysis of seven major scholarly publishing conferences held in 2015 showed an average gender split of 63% male to 37% female speakers, with nearly two-thirds of all keynote addresses given by men.
• To correct for this disparity, the authors propose three distinct challenges, to include a potential accreditation for conferences that prioritise diversity.

     

Creating a consumer health outreach program for Western New York senior citizens: continuing a library school project

The Internet has made accessing information a simple task. Each day millions of Americans log on to the Web in search of information on a variety of subjects. One of the most sought after type of information is medical information. Individuals are taking a more proactive role in their personal health care and the health care of their friends and families. Attempting to locate and evaluate quality health care information can pose a variety of problems for the consumer. Academic libraries have an opportunity to play a crucial role in facilitating the consumer's access to quality, reliable health information by developing and implementing consumer health outreach programs designed to address search problems and information interpretation difficulties. The benefits for both the community and the library are numerous when a consumer health information outreach program is successfully employed. This article will chronicle the creation of a Consumer Health Outreach program, entitled "WNY Consumer Health," intended for senior citizens in Western New York. This program was designed to satisfy the requirements of a graduate special project for the completion of the authors' MLS degree.     

Enabling What Works: The Role of Negotiators in Structuring School Change

The text of this commentary was adapted from a speech given to the North American Education Negotiators. In it, Gould examines some perspectives of one of the nation's two largest teacher organizations, the American Federation of Teachers, on educational reform, teacher quality, and compensation. He argues that collective bargaining serves as an important tool for structuring the educational system. The potential for educational change is one of the reasons why we should examine the potential benefits of pursuing improvements through the bargaining process.
