Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on caregiver mental health and the child caregiving environment in a low-resource,rural context

Early child development has been influenced directly and indirectly by the COVID-19 pandemic, and these effects are exacerbated in contexts of poverty. This study estimates effects of the pandemic and subsequent population lockdowns on mental health, caregiving practices, and freedom of movement among female caregivers of children 6–27 months (50% female), in rural Bangladesh. A cohort (N = 517) was assessed before and during the pandemic (May–June, 2019 and July–September, 2020). Caregivers who experienced more food insecurity and financial loss during the pandemic reported larger increases in depressive symptoms (0.26 SD, 95% CI 0.08–0.44; 0.21 SD, 0.04–0.40) compared to less affected caregivers. Stimulating caregiving and freedom of movement results were inconsistent. Increases in depressive symptoms during the pandemic may have consequences for child development.     

Recent newspaper coverage about persons with disabilities

Newspapers are considered a powerful medium for developing public opinion about issues. In a representative sample of large-city newspapers, we found that three issues--budget, expenditures, or taxes; housing or normalization; and treatment in institutions--were the most frequently featured issues about persons with disabilities. The least frequently mentioned issues were school related, such as instruction, mainstreaming, and Public Law 94-142 compliance. A suggestion was made that if articles about special education are to appear in newspapers, special educators must develop strong relationships with newspaper reporters and their editors.     

Not that different in theory: Discussing the control-value theory of emotions in online learning environments

This commentary investigates the extent to which the control-value theory of emotions (Pekrun, 2006) is applicable in online learning environments. Four empirical studies in this special issue of The Internet and Higher Education explicitly used the control-value theory as their theoretical framework and several others have components of the theory implicitly described. Thus, for each article we examined what emotions were expressed, the antecedents of the emotions, and their academic outcomes in relation to the control-value theory of emotions. In general, the results from these studies parallel those in traditional classrooms, suggesting there are few differences in emotions experienced in online learning environments relative to face-to-face classrooms. A primary reason for the observed similarities in emotions may be that control and value appraisals play consistent roles as antecedents of specific emotions even though students’ learning environment is dramatically different. We conclude with suggestions for future research.
