Implications for nursing in the library activities of the Regional Medical Programs

A consideration of federal support of library facilities, resources and services provided through Regional Medical Programs and the National Library of Medicine's Extramural Programs as they relate to nursing is presented. The position of nurses in policy making and their limited role in the programs are noted.Suggestions are made for greater nursing involvement. It is strongly advised that nurses make greater use of library resources and that administrators and staffs of libraries be more concerned with meeting their needs.     

The ethics of the library crisis and the first amendment

Analysis of the circumstances surrounding Gordon & Breach vs. American Institute of Physics. Albert Henderson has worked in publishing for over thirty-five years. He has provided consulting services to many commercial and nonprofit publishers, including Gordon & Breach, and has been following this case for nearly ten years. He has edited Publishing Research Quarterly since 1994.     

The Bottleneck in research communications

Researchers find it increasingly difficult to investigate the research literature as a result of sharply restricted university library budgest. Fremont Rider's barometer of the effectiveness of an educational institution is more relevant now, after fifty years, because it provides a clear measure of the deficits in university collections and can be corroborated by other evidence of reduced productivity in research. Librarians and faculty have been told there is no money for the library while growth of administrative expenditures has been well funded. Researchers have begun to call for reforms.     

School playgroups: Which features of provision matter?

This paper identifies the shared features of provision in exemplar school playgroups defined using the social capital concepts of bonding and bridging relationships. Relationships promote capabilities amongst people, with play a known capability for advancing children's developmental and educational outcomes. By attending to the bonding and bridging relationships in each school playgroup, exemplar groups were identified and studied to reveal their shared features of provision. Six main features of provision were identified, including materials, facilitator, space, location, scheduling and health and safety. Awareness of these features may benefit school leaders and/or governance seeking to implement a school playgroup within their own community. Findings from this project suggest high-performing school playgroups can operate in areas of lower and higher socioeconomic status and/or parental education, and in regional and rural areas.     

Crossing the Line: Sport and the Limits of Civil Rights Protest

Scholars have ably considered the extent to which sport has been, and continues to be, a force for racial progress. What has been less comprehensively explored, however, are the unique difficulties encountered by athletes who have attempted to use sport to promote civil rights activism. Black athletes, and sympathetic white teammates, have faced considerable obstacles as sportsmen who supported the civil rights struggle. Sport has restricted the ability of sportsmen to successfully engage in civil rights activism. In the belief that it has provided an example of racial progress for the rest of society, in fact, sport has resisted the civil rights movement. This article explores the difficulties faced by athletes who attempted to be part of that movement.
