Teacher educators' reflections on moments in a secondary teacher education course: thinking forward by challenging our teaching practices

In this paper the authors explore two pedagogical moments that occurred within a diversity‐focused secondary teacher education course, giving specific attention to Genevieve's and Debra's reflections as course instructors. We explore the ways in which instructors find themselves challenged, engaged and provoked to rethink taken for granted ideas and beliefs about their pedagogies as teacher educators. We conclude the paper by ‘thinking forward’: challenging teacher educators to be responsible and to be vulnerable with respect to their own teaching stances and to take the time to critically examine their own lived experiences in order to connect with their students' emergent understandings.     

A Western perspective on inclusion in Chinese urban educational settings

During the past 20 years in China a higher priority has been given to overcoming barriers to learning by educators. Legislation in the mid-1980s to establish compulsory school attendence has brought many children and young people into school for the first time. Chinese policy makers have also responded to international debates on the values of inclusive education. Over the past twelve years I have observed significant changes in educational provision, particularly in the cities. In this paper I describe and discuss a series of lessons I saw in Shanghai primary schools and, putting my comments in the context of practice in the UK, I ask to what extent do developments in China represent a move towards greater inclusion. Obstacles remain in both countries.     

Teacher Work Context and Parent Involvement in Urban High Schools of Choice

This article describes the evaluation of a training programme to enhance the professional competence of residential child care workers in dealing with difficult situations involving adolescents. A pretest-posttest follow-up control-group design without random assignment was used. The results indicate a significant increase in knowledge and behaviour at posttest and follow-up measurement. The overall effect size is considered to be very large, which warrants the conclusion that training has a significantly positive effect on the behaviour of child-care workers and students. Résumé Cet article présente l'évaluation d'un programme de formation destiné à des éducateurs spécialisés travaillant en institution. Le programme a pour but d'augmenter les compétences professionnelles de ces personnes lorsqu'elles sont confrontées à des situations difficiles avec des adolescents. Un modèle "pré-test, post-test et suivi", non distribué au hasard. Les résultats montrent une amélioration significative des connaissances et du comportement lors des mesures "post-test" et "suivi". L'effet global est considéré comme très important, ce qui permet de conclure à un effet significativement positif des programmes de formation destinés aux éducateurs et aux étudiants. Achieving a Preservation Environment with Data Logging Technology and Microclimates

With digital monitoring devices easy to use, inexpensive, and accurate, even the smallest library can afford to identify and address environmental problems using a microclimate approach. This article describes the capability of data loggers and related software, and provides guidance for their selection and use. It further explains how to interpret the data to arrive at affordable solutions for the most pressing environmental problems by treating a library building not as a monolith but as a number of microclimates. By using this approach, libraries can effect modest and inexpensive environmental changes leading to significant improvement in the preservation of library collections as well as potential health problems for staff and users.     

History Day Collaboration: Maximizing Resources to Serve Students

In tough economic times, History Day provides an excellent opportunity for units at a university and interested parties in the community to collaborate in new and interesting ways. A focus on collaboration at St. Cloud State University (SCSU) helped ensure that History Day participants in central Minnesota had a more level playing field with their counterparts in the Twin Cities area. Strong relationships were built over three years of programming, which has become a stabilizing force as members of the team weather more new challenges due to the economic recession.
