Neural tube defects are congenital structural abnormalities of the brain and vertebral column resulting from improper or non-timely
closure of the neural tube. Prevalence of neural tube defects is reported to be higher among women with diabetes mellitus
and obesity. This study was designed to investigate the relation between the presence of dyslipidemia in antenatal patients
and the risk of fetal neural tube defects. The present study was an observational, cross-sectional study involving 129 pregnant
women in 16 to 18 weeks gestation period. Of these, 80 women had normal pregnancies and 49 were clinically high-risk cases
for neural tube defects. Fasting blood samples were analyzed for blood sugar and lipid profile by enzymatic assay and alpha-fetoprotein
levels using Enzyme Immunoassay. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) values were converted to Multiples of Median (MoM) appropriate for
the gestational age. Based on AFP values, women were labeled as screen negative (AFP <2 MoM, n= 102) and screen positive (AFP
> 2 MoM, n =27). Screen positive women were further evaluated by ultrasound and 21 women were found to carry a neural tube
defects positive pregnancy. Statistical analysis was done on SPSS software. Body weight of the women showed a significant
positive correlation with serum triglycerides, plasma sugar and AFP MoM values. A significant difference was observed in serum
cholesterol levels (p= 0.038), triglycerides (p=0.001) and plasma sugar levels (p=0.002) between normal women and those with
neural tube defects positive pregnancy. The Odds ratio for neural tube defects risk in dyslipidemic cases was 24.23 (CI 4.73
− 148.60) with a relative risk of 12.12. Dyslipidemia especially hypertriglyceridemia was found to be significantly associated

Determination of ammonia level in blood is important, especially in the diagnosis of hepatic disorders. An indigenously purified
enzyme was used in the standardisation of the assay. The assay is a two reagent system, requires five minutes for completion
and can be performed at temperature between 25–27°C. Performance of the assay was assessed by linearity, imprecision, functional
sensitivity and interference studies. Lyophilised reagent I and reagent II were found stable for at least one year. The plasma
level of ammonia for the controls was 13.7±7.3 μMol/L, whereas for subjects of hepatic disorders, it was 69.1±32.4 μMol/L
(P<0.001). The functional sensitivity was between 2–1000 μMol/L. Within-run coefficient of variation was between 1.1–2.0%
and between-run coefficient of variation was between 1.9–3.7%. The mean recovery after dilution was 99.6%. The present method
can estimate ammonia up to 1000 μMol/L without dilution of sample. Assay time of five minute may be shortened to one minute.
This method is suited for routine clinical use in treatment of hepatic disorders. 相似文献

Ensuring quality of laboratory services is the need of the hour in the field of health care. Keeping in mind the revolution
ushered by six sigma concept in corporate world, health care sector may reap the benefits of the same. Six sigma provides
a general methodology to describe performance on sigma scale. We aimed to gauge our laboratory performance by sigma metrics.
Internal quality control (QC) data was analyzed retrospectively over a period of 6 months from July 2009 to December 2009.
Laboratory mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation were calculated for all the parameters. Sigma was calculated
for both the levels of internal QC. Satisfactory sigma values (>6) were elicited for creatinine, triglycerides, SGOT, CPK-Total
and Amylase. Blood urea performed poorly on the sigma scale with sigma <3. The findings of our exercise emphasize the need
for detailed evaluation and adoption of ameliorative measures in order to effectuate six sigma standards for all the analytical

In this information age, the capacity to perceive structure in data, model that structure, and make decisions regarding its
implications is rapidly becoming the most important of the quantitative literacy skills. We build on Kaput’s belief in a Science
of Need to motivate and direct the development of tasks and tools for engaging students in reasoning about data. A Science
of Need embodies the utility value of mathematics, and engages students in seeing the importance of mathematics in both their
current and their future lives. An extended example of the design of tasks that require students to generate, test, and revise
models of complex data is used to illustrate the ways in which attention to the contributions of students can aid in the development
of both useful and theoretically coherent models of mathematical understanding by researchers. Tools such as Fathom are shown
as democratizing agents in making data modeling more expressive and intimate, aiding in the development of deeper and more
applicable mathematical understanding.

The relationship between materialism and social-emotional behavioural difficulties (SEBDs) was assessed by comparing a sample of adolescents receiving in-school behavioural support with adolescents not receiving any support. All participants completed the Youth Materialism Scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Binary logistic regression indicated that adolescents who reported higher levels of materialism were more likely to be classified into a group considered ‘at-risk’ for developing conduct and peer problems. Hierarchical logistic regression assessed the moderation of behavioural support and indicated that adolescents in receipt of behavioural support who reported higher levels of materialism were at a greater risk of hyperactivity in comparison to those who receive support but reported lower levels of materialism. For adolescents not receiving behavioural support, less materialistic attitudes placed them at a greater risk of hyperactivity. These findings highlight the importance of distinguishing between different SEBD typologies and the potential effects of materialism during adolescence. 相似文献

This review explores Jackson and Seiler’s “I am smart enough to study postsecondary science: A critical discourse analysis of latecomers’ identity construction in an online forum” by considering the analytic framework for figured worlds guiding this study. We consider the specific affordances of cultural production theory for examining how sociohistorical and cultural discourses of science as elite impact individuals at every level of education.
