An example of regional co-operation: APEID

Increasingly, as has been seen in other contributions to this ‘dossier’, developing countries are realizing that one way to increase the value of international aid and to improve their own selfsufficiency, is to co-operate among themselves. The United Nations system, in turn, has increasingly supported efforts on a regional level to exchange experience, information and know-how. At a recent meeting, ‘Technical Co-operation among Developing Countries’ (UNDP/ESCAP regional meeting, Bangkok, Thailand, March 1976), the Director of the Asia Programme for Educational Innovation for Development (the main thrust of the programme has previously been described inProspects, Vol. IV, No. 4, p. 535) made the following statement about the specifically Asian aspects of the question, as reflected through the activities of APEID.     

Developing Policies for the Whole Curriculum

Using questionnaires and structured interviews the project team examined the processes of primary/secondary transfer and curricular liaison in five secondary and associated primary schools. Issues were identified in the areas of: the function of the liaison process, the nature of learning-support systems, factors in pastoral care and discipline, and the perspective of pupils. Examples of varied practice offered a broader perspective and directions for further development.

It is hoped that these observations could be useful to a school wishing to re-examine its policies.     

Designing Procedural Graphics for Surgical Patient-Education Modules: An Experimental Study

To understand how readers approach mechanical procedural instructions, this study tested surgical patient-education modules for the effectiveness of route and survey spatial perspectives in text. The results showed that subjects' ability to comprehend an intricate procedural action in surgery varies with learning styles and task approach along with different text-graphic perspectives. Overall, survey perspective worked better than route perspective in text. Readers' self-reporting of task difficulty and the effects of practicing did not notably affect their judgment.

abstract There is plenty of evidence that Britain has underinvested in education and now has a smaller base of educated manpower than many industrial competitors. While much debate has centred on what the government can do about it, the government itself now places much hope on the private sector. Yet much government and business policy is at odds with this objective which seems to owe more to romanticism about capitalism than to hard‐headed appreciation of where the market really can deliver the educational goods by creating appropriate private incentives.
