The professional development needs of early career academics (ECAs) are increasingly subject to scrutiny. The literature notes writing groups can be successful in increasing research outputs and improving research track records – a core concern for ECAs. However, the pressure on ECAs to publish takes the pleasure out of writing for many. We argue writing groups, created by and for ECAs, can provide an environment for ECAs to (re)produce pleasure in writing and participation in the processes of academic review and debate. In addition, our experience of a writing group was that it provided a platform of social and emotional support contributing to our personal well-being and professional development. 相似文献

Using Fullan's (1982) The Meaning of Educational Change (Toronto, OISE Press) multidimensional framework, this paper discusses the problems of curriculum change by examining the subjective experiences of physical education teachers. The discussion was based on interviews with teachers who were involved in a study to change health behaviors of high school students. Although no discernable changes in behavior were observed, the explanations for the results, as reported by the teachers, have provided insights of greater importance. Two physical education classes consisting of boys and girls aged between 11 and 13 years from 20 secondary schools were selected for pre-test and post-test measurements. The data collected included a survey, direct observation, heart rate monitoring and motion sensoring. A teacher-designed modification of the physical education curriculum was used as an intervention as it was specifically aimed at increasing activity. A debriefing of teachers in the experimental group indicated that they considered the teacher-designed lesson guide to be valuable. However, when the teachers were faced with implementing change in their physical classes, they (like the researchers) underestimated the situational and personal-social factors that prevented untested ideas from being transformed into firm beliefs and values. The findings confirmed the predictions of a multidimensional model of educational change, which indicated that, when challenged, technological and material innovations are more easily changed than attitudes, beliefs and values held by teachers. 相似文献

Drawing on data generated by a two-year ethnographic study in a high security Spanish prison, this article explores the multiple meanings given to the social practices of sport and physical activity. We provide details of the following key themes that emerged from the analysis: (a) escaping time; (b) perceived therapeutic benefits; (c) social control; (d) gendered dimensions; and (e) performing masculinity. The findings suggest that a diverse and contradictory set of meanings are associated with sport and physical activity within this particular prison culture, and that the performance of specific kinds of masculinity is both a process and product that shapes the construction of experience in powerful ways. 相似文献

This study investigated profiles of South Korean early childhood educators' teacher self-efficacy and contributing factors to teacher self-efficacy. The contributing factors were examined with a focus on early childhood education (ECE) center climate and depression severity in teachers as well as teacher and classroom characteristics. The results suggested that Korean early childhood educators' teacher self-efficacy was multi-dimensional, and each dimension had unique predictors. ECE center climate emerged as the most significant contributor to all teacher self-efficacy domains. Depression severity in teachers was associated with teacher self-efficacy but the facets of association were different according to the attributes of the efficacy domains. Instructional efficacy, which directly pertains to teaching professions, was not associated with depression in teachers. On the other hand, teacher self-efficacy domains containing affective aspects, such as creating positive social contexts and parental involvement and decision-making, were vulnerable to depression severity. 相似文献

As the influences of science and technology on its national economy have increased, each country has devised various funding programs for research and development (R&D) projects. Numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the performance of such R&D projects. In most studies, the performances were measured in terms of an ordinal Likert scale, but they were treated as continuous variables. Much important information can be buried when a categorical Likert scale is treated as continuous variable. In this paper, we treat Likert scales as categorical and apply quantification method II to analyze the relationship between short- to mid-term performance factors and long-term impact factor of R&D projects. We apply the proposed approach to the survey data obtained from the Science and Technology Promotion Fund in Korea. The results of this paper are expected to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of R&D funding. 相似文献
