Career and workplace experiences of Australian university graduates who are deaf or hard of hearing

This article reports on the experiences of a group of deaf and hard-of-hearing alumni of Griffith University in south-east Queensland, Australia. Participants completed a survey answering questions about their communication patterns and preferences, working lives, career barriers or difficulties anticipated and encountered, and workplace accommodations used or sought. Results revealed a range of career barriers and workplace difficulties encountered by these participants, as well as solutions found and strategies used by them. Differences in employment sector, job-search activities, difficult workplace situations, and use of accommodations were noted between 2 groups: those who communicated primarily in Australian Sign Language and considered themselves to have a Deaf or bicultural identity and those who communicated primarily in spoken English and considered themselves to have a hearing identity. Implications for university services supporting deaf and hard-of-hearing students are outlined, and suggestions for further research are made.

The missing slope: paradoxical shortening of activated partial thromboplastin time in a patient on unfractionated heparin therapy

This case report describes false shortening of activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) due to erroneous optical reading of the clotting point in the presence of unfractionated heparin (UFH), and a biphasic waveform. Activated partial thromboplastin time performed on a coagulometer with photo-optical detection yielded an ambiguous clotting curve characterized by an early and steady decrease in light transmittance throughout the whole measuring range, with the clotting point read at 65 seconds. Further investigations included measurement of aPTT by means of a mechanical clot detection method as well as determination of another heparin-sensitive coagulation assay, that is thrombin time (TT), both being unmeasurably prolonged (> 150 seconds). Communication with clinicians revealed that the patient was on continuous UFH therapy and had an underlying sepsis, with highly elevated C-reactive protein (289 mg/L). The aPTT measurements requested at three timepoints later during the same day revealed gradual aPTT shortening and unveiled a peculiar biphasic waveform pattern. In this case, unmeasurably prolonged aPTT due to UFH therapy was masked by a biphasic aPTT curve pattern making only the first slope of the biphasic waveform visible within the measuring range. The early decrease in plasma light transmittance mimicked optical changes related to clot formation, thus causing erroneous optical reading and yielding a falsely shortened aPTT. This case emphasizes that such a pattern should be carefully inspected, especially when a combination of a critically ill condition and UFH therapy is present, in order to prevent erroneous reporting of aPTT and potential adverse effects on patient care.     

The bells: A re‐appraisal

The Bells, although universally described by critics as melodrama, departs markedly from the traits most usually associated with the form. An investigation of this seeming contradiction leads to the testing of an alternate model for melodrama and an illumination of the play's structure by means of this model. The resulting analysis points clearly to the need for more theoretical work into the nature of melodrama.     

Information technologies and civic engagement: Perspectives from librarianship and planning

Urban planning and librarianship are parallel fields in many ways. Both have theoretical and practical underpinnings driving each discipline; are interdisciplinary in focus; and both professions gather and disseminate information to stakeholders. Essential to the success of each discipline is an engaged user population. The authors use a case study from the Village of Oak Park to examine and reflect upon the effect of the Internet and other technologies in the public's ability to participate in an open planning process. The Village of Oak Park is known for its architectural heritage and outspoken community. Within its 4.5 square miles live a diverse population of approximately 52,000 people from different cultures, races, ethnicities, professions, lifestyles, religions, ages, and incomes where a majority of the population have some advanced education and over 80% of the households report home Internet use. How does a community like the Village of Oak Park engage in the planning process? What role does information play in this process? Can modern Information Technologies facilitate civic engagement? These questions are examined during a year-long case study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in cooperation with the Village of Oak Park (VOP). Specifically, the investigators examined how information is gathered and used in the planning process and how the introduction of Information Technology (IT) tools influenced public participation and introduced many citizens to e-government through the planning process. The use of these tools is compared to the traditional planning process. Data from the project is presented to demonstrate a different kind of role librarians play in the research process. Last, the authors discuss the role of privacy in the gathering and sharing of information with the reliability of that information and the impact of privacy on the public planning process.
