Evaluation of parenting,depression and violence profiles in methadone maintained women

Twenty-one patients of the Family Center Program for pregnant drug dependent women were studied employing tools which indicate potential ability to parent or risk of child abuse. The Profile of Mood States and Beck Depression Inventory were administered, and a Violence Questionnaire was self-administered to ascertain the presence of physical or sexual abuse in the mothers' lives. These results were compared to an assessment of parenting ability as well as general demographics and urinalyses which indicate whether the mothers were taking any drugs in addition to their methadone. Results revealed that there were strong relationships between parenting ability and abusive life events, prenatal clinic attendance, use of depressant drugs, number of children, age, and education and/or employment. These variables were also interrelated with depression, abnormal mood states, and general drug abuse. It appears that while polydrug abuse, psychological problems, and stressful life events are strong indicators of poor parenting ability, the successfully methadone maintained woman who does not feel the need to supplement her methadone with other drugs, whose life has stabilized, and who is relatively normal in her affect and mood, has a strong potential for good childrearing ability.     

Black power ideology rhetoric and reality in a student sample

In America the ethic of individual achievement has always been balanced by complementary norms of group action. Blacks, however, have been handicapped by a lack of the in-group loyalty required for a united struggle against racial oppression. Black power ideology was conceived as a sociotherapy to increase the level of black group cohesion. This study was designed to provide much needed data on the success of the “therapy.” A survey of 611 black high school students and 93 black college students yielded little evidence that verbally professed endorsement of black power ideology was translated into action. In an experiment. 323 black high school students manifested a consistent tendency to be less helpful to scientists identified as black than to unidentified scientists, regardless of the students' claimed level of black power orientation.     

Comparative functions of preschool learning style and IQ in predicting future academic performance

Early assessment programs frequently rely on intelligence tests for making predictions regarding children's future school performance. Unfortunately, IQ scores provide little information to those who must develop educational interventions tailored to the unique ways in which children respond to learning situations. Alternatively, measures of children's learning style focus on distinct patterns of learning-related behavior manifested in classroom settings. Each dimension of learning style is composed of observable skills that are potentially teachable or alterable through available instructional procedures. In order to examine the relative contributions of learning style dimensions, IQ, and their interactions to the prediction of subsequent performance, 100 kindergarten children were evaluated by teachers using the Study of Children's Learning Styles scale and were administered the Kuhlmann-Anderson Intelligence Test. Fifteen months later the children's first-grade achievement was determined through standardized tests and teacher-assigned grades in reading, language, and mathematics. Relationships between the predictor and criterion variables were studied through patterns of bivariate correlations, canonical variate loadings, and standardized regression weights. Although IQ was found the better predictor, learning styles accounted for appreciable and statistically significant proportions of the variability in later achievement. The learning style dimensions functioned differentially across areas of achievement to enhance overall prediction either by complementing or interacting with the predictions afforded by IQ. The results are examined in the light of earlier research on learning-related behavior.

以柏拉图、西塞罗、奥古斯丁为重要坐标,描述三位思想家在西方古代国家定义上的承继关系.柏拉图讨论了国家的起源和其他方面,但没有给出国家定义.西塞罗创造性地提出了自己的国家定义,他的定义有三个特征:以人民为前提,以正义为准则,以合法为本性.奥古斯丁吸取了西塞罗定义的基本框架,从定义人民入手界定国家,用神的正义替换西塞罗的自然正义,从而完成了他自己的国家定义,为批判希腊罗马社会、构建基督教的理想社会奠定了理论基石.     

Efficiency analysis of a filtering algorithm for discrete-time linear stochastic systems with polynomial measurements

A filtering algorithm is presented for discrete-time linear stochastic systems with polynomial measurements. The techniques to evaluate its efficiency are proposed. The algorithm performance is demonstrated by solving two navigation data processing problems, map-aided navigation using geophysical fields and single-beacon navigation for an autonomous underwater vehicle. The designed polynomial filter is compared to the extended Kalman filter, which is commonly used in practice. The simulation results reveal advantages of the polynomial algorithm. The obtained conclusions are reported.     

Intro to Archival Science: Developing an Undergraduate Archival Elective Outside of a LIS Program

Abstract

This case study describes the development and implementation of a three-credit undergraduate archival science course at Mount St. Mary’s University. Offered through the university’s Department of History, this course was designed to prepare students for positions in archives-related careers, unlike most research-based undergraduate archival electives. Benefits of the course to both students and the archivist profession will be discussed.

"至善(perfect good)"理论是托玛斯·阿奎那伦理学思想的一个重要组成部分.阿奎那的"至善论"与其前辈奥古斯丁的"至善论"既有着千丝万缕的联系又有着根本的不同.阿奎那一方面继承了奥古斯丁的神学价值目标,另一方面又用亚里士多德的学说修偏补弊,以诠释自己的"至善"意趣,由此补正了奥古斯丁关于神恩与人性各行其道的格局,从而成为近代启蒙价值复兴的过渡性环节.
