Irving's Ambivalence toward the “New” America in “Rip VanWinkle”

Set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War, Irving’s short story“Rip Van Winkle”is frequently read as a mythic escape from history; however, Irving’s vision of history is far more complicated than what it appears to be in the sense that Irving presents his ambivalent attitudes toward the new America the Revolution created by hiding his discourse of implicitly criticizing the American Revolution’s legacy under the cover of his explicit or public celebration of the Revolution.

爱伦坡的短篇小说《椭圆画像》,通过运用叙述的方法和对女性形象的剖析,采用"嵌入式"的结构,使作品更加新奇、引人入胜。该短篇小说以当时的社会环境为背景,叙述了当时男权主义盛行的时代,女性的存在是全然缺席的,没有发言的权利,女性一直处于最边缘的地位。本文通过对《椭圆画像》的道德、情感以及女性地位等方面的解读,着重分析了当时社会环境下形成这些女性形象的深层次原因,从而有利于我们从客观真实的角度来解析爱伦坡的女性观。

文章运用解构主义分析文本的主要方法 ,对《瑞普·凡·温克尔》中传统与革新、家庭与社会、泼妇与贤妻这三对主要的二元对立进行了颠覆和消解。对之前作品中存在的怀旧倾向、家庭责任和社会关系以及温克先生的同情和对温克夫人的指责的评论提出了质疑,从而证明解构主义关于文本意义不确定性的结论,并为作品提出了一种新的解读方法。

Behavioral assessment of communication competency and the prediction of cross-cultural adaptation

This study explores the relationship between interpersonal and social behaviors and patterns of success and failure in cross-cultural adaptation. Seven interpersonal communication skills often mentioned as being important to cross-cultural adaptation were studied: empathy, respect, role behavior flexibility, orientation to knowledge, interaction posture, interaction management and tolerance for ambiguity. For each dimension, behavioral observation indices were developed. Following a week-long predeparture training program, behavioral assessments were made on these dimensions for each person in a group of technical advisors and spouses assigned to two-year postings in Kenya. One year later, an in-the-field follow up study was conducted to assess shock dynamics, psychological adjustment, and vocational and interactional effectiveness of these individuals. Comparisons of pre and post-test measures indicated that each of the focal dimensions predicted patterns of success and failure in adaptation with varying degrees of adequacy. These results and implications for further research, and cross-cultural training and selection, are explored in the final section of the article.
