Visual and orthographic information in learning to read and the influence of phonics instruction

In the Jackson and Coltheart theory of acquisition of word reading it is claimed that, near the beginning of the partial alphabetic phase of development, children have full use of abstract letter units (ALUs). This claim and less exclusive alternatives were examined. In Experiment 1, normal progress children with on average 9 months of school reading instruction, either with or without explicit phonics, read with moderate accuracy (orthographically) familiar words in upper-case letters (e.g., AND) that are visually dissimilar from their lower-case forms. Lower-case forms were read with greater accuracy but only for familiar words, there being no letter-case effect for less familiar words. Children with explicit phonics showed less impairment in reading accuracy when words were presented in upper-case form than children without such phonics. Children with on average 22 months of instruction, in Experiment 2, read relatively unfamiliar words that required some phonological mediation. Those without explicit phonics instruction read words with digraphs in unfamiliar upper case less accurately than in lower case, while those with explicit phonics showed no such letter-case difference. The results supported the view that children do not have full use of ALUs in early alphabetic reading, both children with and without explicit phonics to some extent using letter identities specific to lower case for representation of familiar words.

Inferential talk during teacher–child interactions in small-group play

This study examined teachers’ questions and children's responses during a play-based activity implemented in small groups within preschool classrooms. The first aim of this study was to describe teachers’ questions in terms of four levels of abstraction (i.e., a continuum of literal to inferential questions) and children's responses to these questions. The second aim was to examine the relations between teachers’ questions and children's responses using sequential analyses, to include children's level of abstraction and mean length of utterance (MLU). Participants were 39 teachers and up to six children from their preschool classroom. We found that teachers’ questions made up an average of 25% of their talk to children during play, and were relatively balanced between literal and inferential questions. Furthermore, significant sequential associations were found between the level of abstraction of teachers’ questions and the level of abstraction of children's responses (e.g., teachers’ inferential questions tended to elicit children's inferential responses). Finally, we found that teachers’ inferential questions were not related to children's MLU; that is, teachers’ more abstract questions did not elicit longer utterances from children. These findings suggest that play is a valuable context in which teachers may promote children's use of inferential language.     

抽象行政行为司法审查方式的比较探析

目前,学界对将抽象行政行为纳入行政诉讼受案范围已基本达成共识,却鲜有对抽象行政行为司法审查方式的专门探讨。世界主要国家和地区在这一问题上均采用了具体审查方式,同时对抽象审查方式的适用予以限制。我国宪政体制和司法实践现状将行政法规排除在司法审查的范围之外,推行抽象审查行政规章及规范性文件的时机尚不成熟。未来应通过修改《行政诉讼法》以授权法院在个案中拒绝适用违法规章,宣告违法的行政规范性文件无效。     

学术论文英文摘要常见问题分析——以高校社科学报为例

在编校社科学报英文摘要的实践中,发现摘要的撰写质量堪忧,未能引起作者及编审人员的重视。分析发现主要存在三个方面的问题：论文标题英译错误率高,正文中出现多种＂不一致＂现象,关键词翻译存在缺陷。针对常见的问题笔者提出了相关的建议并强调一些规范要求。

世界是一个整体,科学和艺术从不同的角度认识世界,只有统一在世界认识的整体之中,才有可能整体地把握世界的脉搏。本文否定了“艺术思维是一种‘特殊思维’的结论,认为“艺术思维是思维在艺术范围内的一种特殊形式”,形象思维与逻辑思维是互补和相互渗透的,最后归结到当今世界知识发展的必然趋势是高度分化又高度综合,各个学科之间呈现出纵横交叉、资源共享,从而形成许多新的边缘科学,必将有利于促进科学和文化的现代化。
