The opinions about what characterises a good citizen are diverse, yet survey research usually employs variable-centred analytical strategies to examine people’s concepts of good citizenship. The present study builds on a person-centred approach towards good citizenship and validates previously identified types of good citizenship among Australian secondary school students. Following an in-depth characterisation of these types by sociodemographic variables and civic attitudes, this study incorporates multinomial regression analysis to take a closer look at very extreme but practically important patterns. These analyses suggest that students need to believe in the value of civic action to become political enthusiasts and not politically alienated. Civic knowledge may prevent political alienation; however, it is not the ultimate solution as it is negatively correlated with political enthusiasm when controlling for multiple predictors. The results are discussed with respect to their significance for civics and citizenship teaching and learning. 相似文献

For a structural engineer, effective communication and interaction with architects cannot be underestimated as a key skill to success throughout their professional career. Structural engineers and architects have to share a common language and understanding of each other in order to achieve the most desirable architectural and structural designs. This interaction and engagement develops during their professional career but needs to be nurtured during their undergraduate studies. The objective of this paper is to present the strategies employed to engage higher order thinking in structural engineering students in order to help them solve complex problem-based learning (PBL) design scenarios presented by architecture students. The strategies employed were applied in the experimental setting of an undergraduate module in structural engineering at Queen’s University Belfast in the UK. The strategies employed were active learning to engage with content knowledge, the use of physical conceptual structural models to reinforce key concepts and finally, reinforcing the need for hand sketching of ideas to promote higher order problem-solving. The strategies employed were evaluated through student survey, student feedback and module facilitator (this author) reflection. The strategies were qualitatively perceived by the tutor and quantitatively evaluated by students in a cross-sectional study to help interaction with the architecture students, aid interdisciplinary learning and help students creatively solve problems (through higher order thinking). This paper addresses the very important problem of the effectiveness of teaching methodologies in fundamental engineering courses such as transport phenomena. An active learning strategy, termed the colloquial approach, is proposed in order to increase student involvement in the learning process. This methodology is a considerable departure from traditional methods that use solo lecturing. It is based on guided discussions, and it promotes student understanding of new concepts by directing the student to construct new ideas by building upon the current knowledge and by focusing on key cases that capture the essential aspects of new concepts. The colloquial approach motivates the student to participate in discussions, to develop detailed notes, and to design (or construct) his or her own explanation for a given problem. This paper discusses the main features of the colloquial approach within the framework of other current and previous techniques. Problem-solving strategies and the need for new textbooks and for future investigations based on the colloquial approach are also outlined. 相似文献

The number of students entering engineering schools in Australian universities has increased tremendously over the last few years because of the Australian Federal Government's policy of increasing the participation rates of Higher School Certificate students and students from low social economic status backgrounds in the tertiary sector. They now come with a diverse background of skills, motivations and prior knowledge. It is imperative that new methods of teaching and learning be developed. This paper describes an online tutorial system used in conjunction with contextual physics and mathematics, and the revision of the relevant mathematical knowledge at the appropriate time before a new topic is introduced in the teaching and learning of engineering physics. Taken as a whole, this study shows that students not only improved their final examination results but there was also an increase in the retention rate of first-year engineering students which has financial implications for the university. 相似文献

characteristics of the magneto-rheological (MR) fluid with rapid, reversible and dramatic change in its rheological properties
by the application of an external magnetic field. The magnetic field of the disc-type MR fluid damper is analysed by the finite
element method; the controllability of the disc-type MR fluid damper on the dynamic behaviour of a rotor system; and the effectiveness
of the disc-type MR fluid damper in controlling the vibration of a rotor system, are studied in a flexible rotor system with
an overhung disc. it is shown that the magnetic flux density of the disc-type MR fluid damper in the working areas can significantly
change with the applied current in the coil; and that the dynamic behavior of the disc-type MR fluid damper can be varied
by the application of an external magnetic field produced by a low voltage electromagnetic coil. The disc-type MR fluid damper
can significantly change the dynamic characteristics of a rotor system, provided that the location of the disk-type MR fluid
damper is carefully chosen. The disc-type MR fluid damper is a new actuator with good dynamic characteristics for rotating
machinery.

落实从业人员上岗准许制度,是落实煤矿安全生产长效机制和降低煤矿事故发生率的根本保障。为了落实从业人员上岗准许制度,及时发现矿井人、岗、证是否相符和人员是否缺乏,及时分析各行政区域的状况,共享管理人员和特种作业人员信息,及时发布培训和复训指令,借助互联网和ASP编程,建立了Access数据库网络管理系统。实践表明,网络管理系统操作简单、运行稳定、可靠、人机对话界面人性化,监管部门对矿山企业持证上岗情况可实现动态适时监管,杜绝一证多用,及时统计和发布培训和复训指令,并可以方便地实现矿井、多个分站和总站的数据共享,并能方便地监视管理人员和特种作业人员的培训状况和流动性。 相似文献
