查尔斯·达尔文对我一生的影响

在庆祝查尔斯·达尔文诞辰200周年之际，笔者回忆了人生道路上达尔文先生的思想对自己职业生涯的影响，以此来纪念这位伟大的人物。     

完整理解马恩关于维也纳会议正统主义的论述

国内史学界普遍认为正统主义原则是维也纳会议奉行的重要原则之一。并使得许多旧王朝复辟，保护了各国君主制，并引用了恩格斯的话为证明这一结论。但当时欧洲30个国家与地区的政权与领土的演变事实与此大相径庭，而且，马克思和恩格斯对正统主义的评价在过去并未被给予完整的解读和介绍。因此，对历史和以革命导师的真知灼见的误视造成了长期以来对正统主义的功用的认识偏颇。     

论托克维尔“多数的暴政”理论

托克维尔根据报对选民在民主政治中作用的认识，提出了“多数的暴政”理论，本主要从选民“多数”，选民在选举中的作用，选民对当选政治精英的影响三个方面分析了“多数的暴政”，提出“多数的暴政”不是政治领域中多数对少数的专政，而是社会层面多数对个人自由的压制。     

Work on The Principles of Geology is “interrupted,” and Charles Lyell investigates the nature and formation of loess deposits

Charles Lyell's life work, the influential textbook and philosophical treatise The Principles of Geology, helped to shape the Victorian age. There were few diversions from the central task of the Principles of Geology in the course of the twelve editions. Perhaps the most significant and notable was the discovery and investigation of loess; a silty sediment, often of considerable thickness, and widely distributed in the Rhine valley. He made a significant contribution to loess studies and, with his father-in-law, Leonard Horner, explored the loess regions of the Rhine Valley. The loess period lasted roughly from 1830 to 1836, and he established the first paradigm theory for the formation of loess deposits from deposition in a lake or perhaps from slow-moving water. This held sway until displaced by the aeolian theory of F. von Richthofen.

ABSTRACT

On the transition between editors, Charles Popovich reflects on his more than ten-year tenure as the third editor of the Journal of Business&;Finance Librarianship (JBFL) from 1996 to 2005. Among his contributions as Editor are a regular and predictable publication schedule; special thematic issues; business and information professionals from multi-type information settings as authors, contributors and column editors; and broad dissemination of content. This interview seeks to capture Charles Popovich's unique perspective on business librarianship publishing. It also documents some history of Haworth Press' Journal of Business&;Finance Librarianship, established in 1989.     

When art was an Olympic discipline: the Fine Art Salon as a possible model for the concept of the Olympic Art Competitions from an art history perspective

ABSTRACT

In 1948, the seventh Olympic Art Competitions took place in London. The fact that such artistic competitions were conceptualized by Pierre de Coubertin and formed part in the Olympic program in the first half of the twentieth century is not commonly known. And although international sport historians researched different aspects of the Olympic Art Competitions since the 1980s, they have not sufficiently addressed possible artistic influences for such a concept and therefore treat them as a matter of fact. Particularly the fact that Pierre's father, Charles Louis Frédy de Coubertin (1822–1908), had been a famous painter at his time is overlooked up to now. This article traces the artistic background of the father and illustrates how his profession as Fine Art Salon painter influenced Pierre de Coubertin's concept of the Olympic Art Competitions. Subsequently, the paper compares organizational elements of the Fine Art Salons with those of the Olympic Art Competitions and unveils interesting parallels. Concerning the sources used, this article draws on art history sources as well as on unpublished material which was discovered in the archives of the descendants of the Coubertin family.     

Charles Peirce’s Rhetoric and the Pedagogy of Active Learning

Abstract

Although John Dewey has had the most profound effect on education, less is known about the philosophy of education of the original founder of pragmatism, Charles Peirce Using Peirce’s theory of formal rhetoric, I try to show that Peirce’s philosophy of education, when fully understood, is aligned with Dewey’s pedagogy of experiential learning, and can provide a justification for the promotion of active learning in the classroom. Peirce’s rhetoric, as one part of his logical or semiotic theory, argues that reasoning alone is not sufficient to gain knowledge, but that it must be embedded within a community of inquiry, of a certain sort. Applying this to the classroom, I argue that we, as teachers, should endeavor to create the features of a proper community of inquiry in the classroom, one that emphasizes engagement of the students in doing research rather than passively receiving information about its results.
