Cataloging in a Remote Location: A Case Study of International Collaboration in the Galapagos Islands

The Corley Smith Library is a small, special library located at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands. Currently, the library is managed by international volunteer librarians in collaboration with Station staff and local volunteers. Recently the library migrated its online public access catalog to Koha. We describe the process of selecting an open-source integrated library system and implementing Koha. Cataloging in this remote location presents challenges related to technology, staff expertise, language, local practices, and obtaining supplies. We define the strategies to address these issues, including long-term goals of copy cataloging with Z39.50 and remote cataloging by volunteer librarians.     

A Strange Condition of Things: Alterity and knowingness in Dickens’ David Copperfield

Abstract

It is sometimes said that we are strangers to ourselves, bearers of internal alterity, as well as to each other. The profounder this strangeness then the greater the difficulty of giving any systematic account of it without paradox: of supposing that our obscurity to ourselves can readily be illuminated. To attempt such an account, in defiance of the paradox, is to risk knowingness: a condition which, appearing to challenge our alterity but in fact often confirming it, holds an ambiguous place in the ‘ethics of belief’ and has largely escaped philosophical attention. Like alterity, knowingness can only be approached indirectly. Charles Dickens, in David Copperfield, is exemplary in the way he handles these themes.

查尔斯·狄更斯是英国批判现实主义小说的代表作家。《雾都孤儿》作为其早期作品,其中有不少现实性的描写,表现在儿童生活的现实性、下层人士生活的现实性以及司法的现实性等方面。然而,小说中也出现了不少童话性的描写。究其原因,从系统的观点看。构成狄更斯童话性话语系统的关系项主要有客观环境、自组织,以及狄更斯的创作态度等。他的现实性描写,真实再现了资本主义制度下穷苦儿童艰难的处境,而童话性的描写。则是其对社会自上而下改革的美好愿望。     

喻友信早期图书馆生涯考察

喻友信是20世纪中国著名的图书馆学家。但由于他1949年以后行迹不明,导致中国图书馆史研究者对喻友信的生平事迹了解得很不充分。着眼于此,该文首先考察了喻友信的中英文姓名、字号、籍贯与出生年份等情况,然后回顾了他在文华图专与哥伦比亚大学图书馆学院的求学经历,接着介绍了他在上海东吴大学法学院图书馆十六年如一日的工作生涯,最后介绍了他在图书馆学研究领域取得的丰硕成果。

Multiculturalism,Interculturalisms and the Majority

Interculturalism, in its two forms, critiques multiculturalism. A European version emphasises cultural encounter and novelty, and is relatively apolitical except for its disavowal of the national in preference for the local and the transnational. In contrast, its Quebecan counterpart gives significance to the idea of the right of a national community to use state power to reproduce itself. Whilst the former is a recognisably cosmopolitan vision I ask if the latter represents a distinctive mode of integration. The core of the article is a textual examination of two recent publications by leading public intellectual scholars in Quebec, Gerard Bouchard and Charles Taylor, respectively, including a lengthy discussion of the former’s concept of ‘majority precedence’. I argue that Quebecan interculturalism challenges multiculturalists to offer a positive view of ‘the majority’, which to date they have largely neglected to do, but which is possible within the conceptual and normative resources of multiculturalism.     

英雄与时势:普罗泽和美国职业教育制度的奠基

查尔斯·普罗泽是国内教育学界很少关注的美国教育家。在1906-1917年的美国职业教育运动中,普罗泽发挥了中流砥柱的作用。他积极推动了职业教育在马萨诸塞州的开展,领导全国工业教育促进会在全国范围内大力倡导和发展职业教育,直接参与和推进联邦职业教育立法,从而奠定了美国现代职业教育制度,并由此影响了美国公共学校教育的发展方向。在梳理历史文献和国外学者相关研究的基础上,较为系统地探讨普罗泽的教育思想与实践,可以拓展对美国教育史的认识。     

The Gothic Features in Great Expectations

As one of the most well-known novels of Charles Dickens,it is difficult to define one single specific genre for Great Expectations.It is widely recognized as a bildungsroman and realistic fiction and social criticism.In addition to all these genres,we can also identify many intriguing features of Gothic novel.This paper is devoted to interpreting the Gothic characteristics of GreatExpectations,and particularly,settings characters,and the narration of the novel are the major focuses of analysis.     

Two Losses in the American Slavic Book World,Irena Szwede and Charles Gribble

ABSTRACT

The piece is a brief obituary for two American Slavic book people, Irena Szwede and Charles Gribble. Irena Szwede co-founded and managed Szwede Slavic Books, a bookstore that was also a library vendor. Charles Gribble founded and directed Slavica Publishers, a major publisher of scholarly monographs and journals in Slavic studies.     

Loci sigilli and American Indian treaties: Reflections on the creation of volume 2 of Kappler's Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties

The presence–or absence–of locus sigilli “[L.S.]” or “[SEAL]” indicators, to validate the signatures in those texts of American Indian treaties collated by Charles J. Kappler in his Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties, is examined. The results of this inquiry suggest that Kappler spent far more time examining the original treaty documents than Deloria and DeMallie proposed in their Documents of American Indian Diplomacy: Treaties, Agreements, and Conventions, 1775–1979.
