An Holistic Approach for Counsellors: Embracing Multiple Intelligences

This paper explores a range of therapeutic modalities used by counsellors of children and positions those modalities within Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Research by O’Brien (Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence and its implications for the counselling of children. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, 1999) revealed that by drawing on a combination of preferred intelligences, children were able to enhance the dialogue between the unconscious and conscious, while strengthening the relationship between the counsellor and client. A number of useful counselling approaches are highlighted in working with children, particularly younger children who have not yet developed language sufficient for more formal counselling sessions. Suggestions that assist counsellors to operate across settings are explored.     

The Relationship of Supervisory Experience, Counseling Experience, and Training in Supervision to Supervisory Identity Development

The relationship between supervisory identity development and supervisory experience, counseling experience, and training in supervision was examined for Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) members. Analyses indicated that supervisory experience and training were related to supervisory identity development, whilst counseling experience was not. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the importance of supervisor credentials.

The role of the educational psychology service in crisis support is well established. This paper examines a key aspect of this role, the impact on psychologists themselves, and reviews literature on secondary stress, considering the term “stress” itself as part of the discussion. It examines recommendations for professional practice and self care in disasters and considers a model that could be used to inform supervision and professional practice.

学校体育对经历重大灾难事件后中小学生心理创伤的干预策略

近年来我国接连发生了多次重大灾难事件,这些突如其来的重大灾难对于身心脆弱的中小学生来说伤害是不言而喻的。针对中小学生心理创伤的症状进行分析,对学校体育纠治心理创伤的原理、方法和作用进行探讨。结果表明：学校体育对中小学生心理创伤干预有着独特的优越性和积极作用。在实施干预过程中,应当针对中小学生心理创伤的不同症状表现,选择对应的体育项目,创造和谐的体育活动氛围,注重体育教师的言传身教,以此引导学生逐步解除心理障碍。     

The Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator’s Role in Teaching Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

There is a strong likelihood that at least one participant in any Lamaze childbirth education class has had personal experience with childhood sexual abuse. Using the wisdom of Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educators and respected authors in the field of childhood sexual abuse, this column enlightens the childbirth educator in three ways: understanding the incidence of female and male childhood sexual abuse; understanding the effects of sexual, emotional, physical, and verbal abuse on the pregnant and parenting family; and facilitating classes that are sensitive to the needs of survivors of childhood sexual abuse as well to all expectant parents.
