An NCME Instructional Module on Data Mining Methods for Classification and Regression

Data mining methods for classification and regression are becoming increasingly popular in various scientific fields. However, these methods have not been explored much in educational measurement. This module first provides a review, which should be accessible to a wide audience in education measurement, of some of these methods. The module then demonstrates using three real‐data examples that these methods may lead to an improvement over traditionally used methods such as linear and logistic regression in educational measurement.     

Exploring school exclusion through the perspective of child labourers living in Sultanbeyli,on the periphery of Istanbul,Turkey

This study employs a socio-ecological perspective to explore the impact of the community, school environment and personal circumstances of young people living in the squatter district of Sultanbeyli in Istanbul, Turkey, who have been excluded from school and who are working in very difficult conditions. The views explored in this paper are derived from semi-structured interviews that covered the reasons for their exclusion. The findings show that the elimination of poverty and the provision of universal education are linked and that one cannot be achieved without the other. The impact of poverty on the processes of school exclusion requires greater recognition, because it helps to perpetuate an intergenerational cycle of social and educational disadvantage. In the case of these young people from Sultanbeyli, the school system has failed to contribute to their inclusion; instead, it has further increased their marginal, disadvantaged position by unintentionally pushing them into the worst forms of child labour and criminality.     

影响山西高职高专田径队发展的因素研究

通过对山西省第19届大学生田径运动会高职高专组35支参赛队的分析可知:各院校参赛人数水平参差不齐,学校的重视程度可左右田径队的参赛或存在。运动员的选择受各方面的影响,部分院校教练员的职称和人数不合理。运动员的训练时间与文化课较难协调,奖励制度有待完善。     

A Process for Reviewing and Evaluating Generated Test Items

Testing organization needs large numbers of high‐quality items due to the proliferation of alternative test administration methods and modern test designs. But the current demand for items far exceeds the supply. Test items, as they are currently written, evoke a process that is both time‐consuming and expensive because each item is written, edited, and reviewed by a subject‐matter expert. One promising approach that may address this challenge is with automatic item generation. Automatic item generation combines cognitive and psychometric modeling practices to guide the production of items that are generated with the aid of computer technology. The purpose of this study is to describe and illustrate a process that can be used to review and evaluate the quality of the generated item by focusing on the content and logic specified within the item generation procedure. We illustrate our process using an item development example from mathematics drawn from the Common Core State Standards and from surgical education drawn from the health sciences domain.

Exploring the work and learning stories of para‐teachers in a college for further education in England

This paper reports findings from a research project which developed and introduced the Enhanced Learning Support Assistant Programme (ELSAP). This was a source of professional development for learning support assistants who were supporting students with additional learning needs in a college for further education in England. The purpose of this paper is to share findings from the project and to report on how learning support assistants experienced their work in inclusive college classrooms. The research project was a mixed methods study with participants drawn from learning support assistants within one college for further education in England. Data was collected throughout the 14‐week intervention. Findings indicate that issues exist around the uniqueness of the vocational curriculum and the implications this has for classroom support. It also shows how conflicting classroom procedures can generate feelings of confusion and how learning support workers often feel lonely in their role with no natural opportunity to mix with others. Furthermore, it indicates how a general lack of knowledge about teaching and learning contribute to them experiencing difficulty when performing their role which feed their views that a college for further education can be a complex and hostile environment to work in.     

科学技术支撑酒店安全的作用机制与保障体系研究

信息资讯技术的飞跃式发展对现代酒店安全管理提出了巨大的挑战,特别是酒店安全问题越来越受到旅游者的重视,由于显性和隐性的安全隐患来源渠道广泛,使得酒店安全控制与管理变得更为复杂和困难,同时也对酒店安全管理的科技支撑提出越来越高的要求。鉴于此,我们应从酒店安全管理实践的角度出发,对酒店安全管理和科学技术支撑的内在共生性进行分析,构建科学技术支撑酒店安全的作用机制模型,并进一步完善科学技术支撑酒店安全的保障体系,以期能够为酒店安全管理和控制提供一定的借鉴意义,从而促进酒店业的健康、稳定和持续发展。

近年来大学生自杀事件屡屡发生,并呈上升趋势。本文分析大学生自杀背后的原因,寻求解决途径,对高校生命健康教育提出建议。
