Defining and navigating ‘action’ in a Participatory Action Research project

ABSTRACT

While the ‘action’ portion of a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project is a crucial component of the process, action tends to be challenging to define, achieve, and measure. The current paper both defines and describes action within the context of a particular PAR collaboration and explores the process and challenges of navigating and implementing action in a PAR project. The specific PAR project detailed in this paper was executed within a higher education setting and involves a group of undergraduate women co-researchers studying their experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.     

Facilitating action research: reflections on the challenges and opportunities faced by a doctoral researcher engaged in education for sustainable development

ABSTRACT

Many universities have signed international and national declarations that have publicly committed them to embed sustainability within education, research, outreach and management operations. To date, research has focused on examples of good practice and case studies. Little research exists that has looked at the change process itself. This paper is based on a doctoral study conducted at the University of Southampton in which a doctoral student was engaged as a facilitator and critical friend for a period of more than one and a half years working with a group of staff and students trying to embed sustainability within the institution. In this paper, evidence is provided on the impact and contributions made by the critical friend and facilitator role, and reflections presented on the challenges and opportunities the doctoral researcher encountered during the research.

网民集体行动的动力机制探析——以“郭美美事件”为研究个案

利用数据挖掘软件,本研究获得"郭美美事件"初期新浪微博中转发量超过300次的239条微博样本,通过分析,发现网民集体行动的主要动力是:腐败框架、愤怒的培养和威胁感知。在框架竞争中,腐败框架成为主导性的问题定义框架,并设定了人肉搜索"提出框架-证明框架"的模式。腐败框架"标注"出问题的严重性和不公正性,激发了网民的愤怒。在事件进程中,网民的愤怒得到培养并具有娱乐化倾向。在相对自由的网络空间,任何形式的威胁感知都可能激起网民的对抗性反应,并成为集体行动的动力。     

为德国“行动导向”揭开“神秘面纱”

“行动导向”理念最初起源于德国,为德国职业教育发展做出巨大贡献,国内学者对此研究已将近二十余栽,对“行动”及“行动导向”的理解不甚相同,但是有些译误往往阻碍学术前进,本文以澄清“行动”、“行动导向”理念及“行动导向”教学等概念为基础来揭示其内涵,以启示中国职业教育。     

“最高善”问题与实践哲学的隐微显现

《尼各马可伦理学》对“最高善”的规定存在着逻辑上的模糊,这种情形进而又使亚里士多德哲学体系中“praxis（实践）”与“theoria（理论）”间的关系趋于复杂。对“最高善”规定的模糊性概源于亚里士多德与柏拉图的不同叙事风格以及亚里士多德对柏拉图理念论的质疑。此外,praxis和theoria间的张力使得一种隐秘于柏拉图一亚里士多德形而上学开端中实践的哲学成为可能。     

Bring on the Shock Troops: Artists and Gentrification in the Popular Press

Gentrification is one of the most important and talked about contemporary urban issues. Critics have tended to treat the class remake of urban neighborhoods as a geographical and sociological phenomenon. This article critically examines gentrification as symbolic action. Focusing on press coverage of artist-led gentrification, I argue that reporters present a diffusion narrative that casts artists as both urban pioneers and victims of gentrification and glosses over the function of artists as the first gentrifiers in some urban neighborhoods. Ultimately, press accounts of artists as victims of gentrification reflect an underlying desire to find and maintain bohemian spaces in the face of homogeneous and sterile corporate urban revitalization projects that have contributed to a broader sense of urban placelessness. Yet, this vision is based on a bohemian image of the city that consists of young white artists while stigmatizing (through a frontier discourse) the more diverse population(s) that lived and worked in the urban neighborhood prior to the arrival of the artists.
