Raising the Bar: Using Coaching Conversations to Address Issues of Low Expectations for Students in Urban Settings

Abstract

Two instructional coaches explore the effectiveness of targeted coaching conversations to address teachers' perceptions of their students' capacities. In this study, the researchers focus on how specific questions can promote teachers' metacognition of underlying biases held toward their students. Researchers also explore the implications for curricular practices when teachers are prompted to address conceptions of ability.

Apocalyptic public health: exploring discourses of fatness in childhood ‘obesity’ policy

ABSTRACT

Recent ‘obesity’ preventions focus heavily on children, widely regarded as the future of society. The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a flagship government programme in England that annually measures the Body Mass Index (BMI) of children in Reception (aged 4–5) and Year 6 (aged 10–11) in order to identify ‘at risk’ children and offer advice to parents. Using Foucauldian discourse analysis this study explores how discourses within the programme construct fatness. The NCMP materials contain three key interrelated themes (concerning the hidden threat of ‘obesity’, the burden of ‘obesity’, and bodies that pose a greater risk) that combine to construct a ‘grotesque discourse’ of apocalyptic public health. ‘Obesity’ is constructed as a social and economic catastrophe where certain bodies pose a greater threat than others. We argue that this discourse has the potential to change health service policy in markedly regressive ways that will disproportionately impact working-class, Black, Asian, and mixed race families.     

历史叙述的深层话语空间——基于对《史记》和《剑桥中国史》中“商鞅变法”话语构建的对比分析

本文从话语构建的角度对比分析了东西方历史文本《史记》和《剑桥中国史》对同一历史事件＂商鞅变法＂的历史叙述异同,指出两者在文本内容和形式上的差异主要表现在立足点、叙述深度和时间指示、结构编排、叙述语选择上。而后本文探讨了对比分析所反映出的历史叙述＂曲解故事＂的基调和其通过深层话语空间所展现的价值判断立场,特别对客观史实叙述中的主观认知倾向进行了讨论,认为历史叙述的意义并不是普遍意义上理解的客观展现过去的事实,而是通过话语构建的方式传承民族文化中的价值观立场。     

语篇分析对大学英语精读教学模式的构建

传统的大学英语精读课沿用"语言分析"的教学模式,在一定程度上影响了精读课堂的教学效果,而语篇分析改变了传统的精读教学模式,它强调从语篇的层面上整体性地理解和掌握语言,对大学英语精读教学具有较强的指导意义。以《新视野大学英语读写教程3》第六单元的语篇为例,将语篇分析理论运用于大学英语精读教学中,旨在提高大学英语精读课程的教学效果,培养学生实际运用语言的能力。     

“语文”之法是修辞

语文≠语言。"语文"是中小学一门课程。其含义是人们运用语言表达思想感情的过程及结果。语言则是语音、词汇、语法构成的符号系统,即一种语文交际的备用工具。话语文章是语言运用的结果即言语交际的中介,虽由语言文字构成,但和语言文字已经不是一回事,因为它是经过人们的头脑组织加工制造出来的言语形式,并承载着说写者思想感情的产品。二者具有本质区别,所以"语文之法"不等于"语言之法"。运用语言讲究表达与接受的交际效果,效果是"语文"的灵魂,修辞是研究如何提高运用语言效果的科学,因而"语文"之法是修辞,不是语法。     

简析王熙凤的权势意象:批评话语分析的视角

话语中隐含的权势是批评话语分析研究的重点之一。文章借助系统功能语言学的相关理论,从批评话语分析的视角对我国古典小说《红楼梦》(杨宪益、戴乃迭英译版1994)中人物王熙凤的话语进行分析,试图揭示背后所隐含的意识形态及所体现的权势关系,从而反映其不同情境下的权势特点,旨在探索批评话语分可适性的同时,为人物的权势意象分析提供参考。     

浅析礼貌原则制约下消极信息商务信函的文体特点

礼貌是人类社会文明的重要标志,是确保商务交际成功的重要手段。消极信息商务信函通常是要将不好的消息传达给合作伙伴或是客户,这种情况在商务交际中是不可避免的,其沟通方式难度较大,因而对礼貌原则与语篇结构具有较高的要求。这里在Leech的礼貌原则的理论基础上,通过系统分析和大量实例证明．从词汇选择、句子特点和语篇模式三个方面探讨了礼貌原则制约下的消极信息商务信函的独特文体特点。

The contradictions embedded in the stories were finances (spending/saving), language (“good”/“bad” English), appearance (satisfaction/dissatisfaction), and race (acceptance/rejection of otherness). The interaction of these tensions showed that the friends engaged in group segregation and integration, which ultimately enabled them to freely express their culturally based truths without fear of marginalization.
