This study addressed the longitudinal reciprocal relations among parent-child cohesion, self-esteem, and academic achievement in elementary school students. A total of 659 students from Grades 4–5 in China (Mage = 10.09 years, 46.3% female) was investigated on five occasions across 12 months. The results indicated that: (a) For the direct reciprocal relations, mother-child cohesion and academic achievement reciprocally enhanced each other; self-esteem and academic achievement transactionally facilitated each other; father-child cohesion and self-esteem reciprocally enhanced each other; self-esteem facilitated mother-child cohesion, but not vice versa. (b) For the indirect relations, father-child cohesion and students’ academic achievement facilitated each other indirectly via self-esteem; students’ academic achievement influenced mother-child cohesion indirectly via self-esteem, but not vice versa. These results delineated the dynamic system among these study variables, and also revealed that father-child cohesion and mother-child cohesion showed both similarities and differences. This study explored a theory for motivation which included aspects of both attribution theory and goal theory. Motivational
variables included beliefs about intelligence (entity or incremental), goal orientation (mastery/learning, performance-approach,
performance-avoidance) and avoidant behaviours. Grades 4 and 5 students from a large, metropolitan school district were surveyed
regarding these motivational variables across the academic domains of reading and mathematics. The relationships among these
motivational variables were explored, as well as differences across domains. A diverse sample allowed differences across ethnic
groups and socioeconomic status to be studied. Results indicate that children could have a generalised notion of motivation
that becomes differentiated when students are asked to reflect on these variables within specified domains. The existence
of few differences across ethnic and socioeconomic groups suggest that instructional style could be a more powerful influence

This empirical paper considers the different purposes for which teachers use examples in elementary mathematics teaching,
and how well the actual examples used fit these intended purposes. For this study, 24 mathematics lessons taught by prospective
elementary school teachers were videotaped. In the spirit of grounded theory, the purpose of the analysis of these lessons
was to discover, and to construct theories around, the ways that these novice teachers could be seen to draw upon their mathematics
teaching knowledge-base in their lesson preparation and in their observed classroom instruction. A highly-pervasive dimension
of the findings was these teachers’ choice and use of examples. Four categories of uses of examples are identified and exemplified:
these are related to different kinds of teacher awareness.
