Worth Knowing: Talmud Study and the Intellectual Values of High School Students at Liberal Jewish Day Schools

ABSTRACT

What do Jewish day school students believe constitutes good understanding and worthwhile learning in the context of their encounter with rabbinic texts in the classroom? This article shares findings from an interview study of Jewish day school students in grades 9 through 12 regarding their attitudes toward the study of Talmud. I argue that high school students’ estimations of the value of Talmud study are shaped, not only by individually held tastes, talents, and commitments, but also by a set of shared intellectual values. These values, related to their beliefs about the purposes of learning and what good learning should accomplish for the learner, develop in the context of their schools and communities and frame how students set goals for and assess their own understanding of Talmud.

网民集体行动的动力机制探析——以“郭美美事件”为研究个案

利用数据挖掘软件,本研究获得"郭美美事件"初期新浪微博中转发量超过300次的239条微博样本,通过分析,发现网民集体行动的主要动力是:腐败框架、愤怒的培养和威胁感知。在框架竞争中,腐败框架成为主导性的问题定义框架,并设定了人肉搜索"提出框架-证明框架"的模式。腐败框架"标注"出问题的严重性和不公正性,激发了网民的愤怒。在事件进程中,网民的愤怒得到培养并具有娱乐化倾向。在相对自由的网络空间,任何形式的威胁感知都可能激起网民的对抗性反应,并成为集体行动的动力。

Framing Effects of News Coverage of the Embryonic Stem Cell Controversy: Issue Involvement as an Effects Moderator

This study examines reactions to ethical and strategic framing in the news coverage of the embryonic stem cell research controversy, depending on the level of issue involvement. In order to test hypotheses regarding the effects of strategic vs. ethical frames and the moderating role played by issue involvement, an online experiment was conducted. Results indicated that these two frames interacted with issue involvement and generated different reactions among participants.     

认知情态表达的动力图式研究及其教学应用

本文从认知语义学的动力图式角度对情态表达进行研究,继承了动力图式（Force—Dynamic）中对于“趋势”动词命题分析的优势,同时弥补了以往FD研究对含有比较多系动词的命题解释力不强的缺陷。将情态表达的“非现实语义力”等级数量的概念带入FD模式中,重点探讨了情态中心词表达语义力的等级数量划分。使得动力图式更加清晰,释解更为有力。同时指出情态表达的动力图式展现,在英语教学中发挥的认知心理学作用。     

The Populist Chameleon: The People's Party,Huey Long,George Wallace,and the Populist Argumentative Frame

This essay argues that a sustained form can be located in the complicated history of populist rhetoric. Despite its chameleonic qualities, the advancement of populism is constituted by alterations in the focus and content, not the structure, of populist activism. This structure, or what I term its argumentative frame, positions a virtuous people against a powerful enemy and expresses disdain toward traditional forms of democratic deliberation and republican representation. I trace these themes through the rhetoric of the People's Party, Huey Long, and George Wallace. I conclude by analyzing the link between populism's persistence in U.S. history and the nation's Founding.

The Intersection Between Deep Moral Frames and Rhetorical Style in the Struggle over U.S. Immigration Reform

This essay highlights and explores a point of tension between theoretical writings on style and moral frames. Past political communication scholarship points to the importance of the feminine style in today's televisual era of politics. In this same political era, the conservative strict parent moral frame has dominated most policy debates. Surprisingly, this highly successful moral frame appears squarely at odds with the feminine style so closely connected with political success. This essay attempts to unravel this tension between styles and frames by examining discourse drawn from the 2007 debate over comprehensive immigration reform. To account for the success of conservative messages within this debate, this essay both (a) calls into question the nature of the relationship between the television medium and the feminine style and (b) expands our understanding of the discursive operation of deep moral frames by drawing a distinction between intra-familial and extra-familial policy discourse.     

《纽约时报》和《人民日报》北京奥运报道框架比较分析——对提升今后我国体育新闻报道的思考

距2008年北京奥运会一周年。后奥运时代需要反思媒体在其中的表现,以及奥运会给中国传媒业带来的深刻变化。本文运用框架理论的分析方法,对《纽约时报》和《人民日报》2008年北京奥运会的报道进行比较研究,发现中国媒体此次报道视野开阔,国际化思路彰显,树立了理性、建设性的报道基调,采取了宽泛的报道框架,从而最终为公众提供了一次非常好的奥林匹克文化教育活动。但是,今后媒体需要加大深度报道力度,坚定“以人为本”的报道理念,进一步克服“金牌至上”的报道框架。
