Contexts and functions of music in the Orbis sensualium pictus textbook by John Amos Comenius

The present study deals with the content-related and thematic, as well as visual and semantic, contexts in which musical motifs, and words and notions with a musical meaning, are placed in the Orbis sensualium pictus textbook of John Amos Comenius. They can be found in several places in the textbook in both its textual and pictorial components. They are used for a broad demarcation of the fields in which music is presented as a philosophical and aesthetic, didactic, communication, ethical and theological phenomenon. In this way, music is presented to the children of the seventeenth century through the Orbis sensualium pictus not only in the form of its specific object or event, in its metaphorical or symbolical meaning but, first of all, as a phenomenon present in the various fields of spiritual and everyday life. The reader becomes acquainted with music in its various functions, with its form, practical utilisation, relation to other fields of art and science, its position within philosophical concepts, its ethical dimension, aesthetic values, spiritual as well as transcendental essence. The purpose of the present study is to explore the essence, present the origins, genesis, sources for inspiration and objectives of the textual as well as the pictorial form of the music syllabus in this pictorial textbook, most widely used in the European context, and, at the same time, to point out the juxtapositions, links, functions and contexts into which music is placed throughout its contents.

The legal framework for establishing private universities in Swaziland

Abstract

This article draws on a doctoral study which investigated the legal and management frameworks required for establishing private universities in Swaziland. The focus is particularly on the legal framework for establishing the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU). Managers involved in establishing SANU encountered a lack of both specific legislation dealing with private higher education and existing legislation regulating higher education in Swaziland in general. These managers disagreed on whether the legality of a private university derives from a private Act of Parliament or from a Certificate of Registration. The researcher designed the study as action research and acted, as one of the managers, as an insider researcher. After investigating this problem through a literature review, focus group discussions, participant observation and personal conversations the researcher concluded that, to ensure that the legality of SANU is not questioned in future, the best option in establishing SANU was to follow a dual process of adopting a private Act and engaging in a registration process.     

Selection as contract to teach at the student's level. Experiences from a South African mathematics and science foundation year

The selection of students is a critical issuecurrently facing South African higher educationinstitutions. The identification and selection ofdisadvantaged students with the potential to succeedin mathematics- and science-based study is aparticularly pressing problem. The new South Africanhigher education law requires that selection is donein a fair and transparent manner. Selection has to befollowed by adequate support for selected students tosucceed in their study programmes. Issues of accessare closely coupled to issues of retention andsuccess. The research results discussed in this paperillustrate how these issues can be successfullyaddressed and how selection fairness and effectivenessmay be optimised under the constraints of selectionefficiency. An optimal solution can be found bydeveloping test specifications and selection cut-offvalues based on the teaching programme for which theselection is done. The resulting close fit betweenselection testing and teaching after selection leadsto a reasonable expectation of success for selectedstudents in the study programme. Under suchconditions, selection can be seen as a contract toteach at the student's level.
