Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived uses of diploma examination results by Alberta, Canada, high school teachers and to replicate and extend D. Loerke's (1993) study. Classroom teachers and school-based administrators (N = 414) across Alberta took part in the research questionnaire developed to measure the variables under study. Findings indicate that classroom instruction has improved as a result of the reimplementation of diploma examinations, concerns about the reduction of teacher autonomy as a result of diploma examinations persist, study participants lacked the professional training necessary to make the most of the available student assessment information, and the perceived uses of diploma examination results have changed since the Loerke study. These findings have the potential to contribute to changes in teacher assessment practices in Alberta regarding appropriate use of standardized test results as a measure of student learning. 相似文献

Research has revealed a significant gap between the thinking patterns and software design habits of students or recent computer science university graduates and those of expert software developers.There may be several causes for this gap, one of which is undoubtedly the fact that throughout their studies students are mostly asked to write software programs of relatively lim-ited scope, and are not usually required to work as part of a team constructing a complex program.In the present paper we will describe a study unit intended to be taught as part of a high school computer science curriculum, which emphasizes the software system aspects. ABSTRACT While interest in gender‐related differences in performance in examinations and assessment in the UK has been considerable, it has tended to focus on the compul‐ sory phase of schooling, particularly at age 16. This lack of attention to gender‐related differences in examinations at 18+ is somewhat surprising since outcomes at this stage of education are critical in terms of life chances and entry into higher and further edu‐ cation. This article discusses the picture of gendered achievement in the GCE A level examination. Trends in differential performance over time are examined and expla‐ nations put forward as to why these differences in performance occur. Explanations proposed cover links between gendered styles of learning and the style of examining; the statistical and educational impact of self‐selecting populations on performance patterns; and the contribution of different assessment techniques to differences in male and female examination performance. Finally, suggestions of where action might be taken to rectify the differences observed are given. The discussion in the article is supported by data from two research projects that have studied in detail the inter‐ action of examination systems and gender. 相似文献
